corrupted pace in mile 1

Today I ran 4 miles at a consistent pace. However, the fr 265 did not read it that way. Miles 2-4 were around a 14:10 pace but  the first mile was around 21:45 as registered by the watch.ANy idea why?

Attached is the pace chart from Garmin Connect on the web. It just shows the first mile and then part of the remainder where pace is consistent.

  • Did you have a solid GPS lock before you started the activity? I've seen stuff like this without one. (Usually not as severe, though.) What does your GPS track look like for the first mile?

One thing I've noticed is that even if your GPS status is green, it doesn't necessarily mean you have a solid lock. I'll often see green GPS, but my pace is still fluctuating wildly (even though I'm standing still.) If I start the activity at this point, the first few seconds of the run will have a bad GPS track.

So what I usually do is wait for green GPS and wait for my pace to settle to zero before pressing START.

I've also noticed (with older watches) that if you start an activity without a green GPS, it could take a very long time to get a stable GPS lock (if you never stop moving), which means that your GPS track and pace could be bad for an extended period of time (like in your case.)

  • Thanks for answering. Yes, I did have a solid green lock on my fr265. I then waited another minute as I had to retie my shoes.

  • What does your track look like? Is it erratic? That could indicate a GNSS/GPS issue. What are you GNSS/GPS settings?

  • Just running along roads.
