Garmin Coach Plan - Repeating Time Trial Workouts

Currently on week 4 of 12 for Coach Greg's 5k plan. This week a mile time trial replaced the regularly scheduled long run.

Next week (week 5 of training plan) has a mile time trial replacing the scheduled long run again, making it back to back weeks of time trials. The remaining workouts for the week are not identical to week 4, only the time trial in place of a long run.

No workouts were skipped, moved, and all workouts have been reviewed and rated each time. Watch model is Forerunner 265S.

  • Will the training program progress if I just run a long run instead? Can I skip the time trial without upsetting the Garmin Coach?
  • Is this by design? Should I be repeating mile time trials on back to back weeks?
  • Anyone experience a similar issue, what did you do?

  • I have been using and completed all the Garmin coach programs except full marathons. For the 5 k I completed one from each coach.
i don’t recall having seen time trials on 2 consecutive weeks, but I can imagine that could happen.

Time trials are a cornerstone for these programs to give you pace targets for all your workouts and to calculate a level of confidence in achieving certain results. Some coaches can give you a very accurate estimate for your race times from. 5k to a full marathon just by using your best time on max effort 1 mile run (see Jeff Galloway”s Magic Mile model for example).

i suspect the back end systems have found a reason to include a new benchmark run. Maybe some incoherent data from your runs, maybe because of data capture issues or significant fitness/readiness change?

Feel free to with stick to the program or deviate. There is no coach yelling or punishing you if you miss practice :-), and the program will continue its merry way with good, partial or poor data.
