HRR zones incorrect

I’ve noticed that the HRR zones on the watch are not reflecting what is set in Garmin Connect or manual calculations. Basically, HRR zones on the watch are identical to HRmax zones.

When set in Garmin Connect, the zones accurately reflect the difference (even though it’s hard to check with Connect not showing the BPM unless you switch to BPM zones). 

Any possible solutions? 

  • I have to say that this is an amazing thread, and am grateful for the discussion. I have taken to mostly ignoring the messages about low anaerobic TE.

    It seems that Garmin is missing an opportunity here, w/r to measuring/estimating anaerobic TE. The methodology can change based on the activity. If a user selects an activity that has, or doesn't have, GPS/pace, power, etc. the algorithm can be changed. When I select strength training, the algorithm would have to rely on HR information. I assume that, in a case like this, they could look at the rate of change (derivative w/r to time) for the HR, versus the time of the activity to determine an anaerobic TE.

    As an aside, there are other opportunities available to use the available metrics to tell us things. I suggested to Garmin that they could provide an alert for folks with atrial fibrillation during runs (I have personal experience here). If my HR suddenly increases (or decreases) with respect to my power, pace, changes in elevation, etc. this could be an alert for folks that want to opt in. I also say decrease in HR because I have found that sometimes during Afib, the optical HR algorithm reads the HR as low. Presumably because it's not getting a string enough signal.

    Regardless, thanks for the excellent information into how this works. I would hope that they would pin a discussion like this.

    Anaerobic TE works well for running (with pace) and biking (with power).

    It does, and does it well for running and biking. Without pace or power though, the anaerobic TE might be underestimated.

    Strength training is THE activity that is treated the most unfairly by estimating AnTE with HR only. It is a "100%" anaerobic activity that typically doesn't get the HR high enough to reflect it.

    I have suggested some approach to Garmin a while ago as I was researching the topic. Given the available research out there, I hope there is somebody at Firstbeat that is looking into developing a solution and some IP around it. That could differentiate Garmin's product in a good way.
