Max heart rate auto adjust not working

When I first got this watch it had a max heart rate for 187 set. I have no idea what it really is so I opted to correct by 220-age forumula which gives 182 for a 38y/o male.

I did a run yesterday, and my heart rate zones seemed a bit of point, and so I checked max heart rate again, and sure enough, it's back to 187 bpm. The highest recorded heart rate since getting the watch was last Sunday (also with external garmin pro plus hrm), and this gave 176 bpm.

Now, a peculiar coincidence, or just a flaw/bug in the design, is that I did have a 235 some years back, and in 2016 i recorded a max heart rate of 187 in an all out 5k test race. So my thinking is that 187 initially, was probably set up that number, but could the watch/connect app be reverting back to this number from 7 years ago as my all time high?

Is there anything other to the heart rate adjustment then "catching" any values above your current max and setting that as your new max?

Based on published information, this is indeed the way the auto-detection works. We are also lead to believe that the detected HR Max is updated if a valid, qualified period of time shows a higher value than the current value. Based on other users' experience, historical peaks are taken into account, not only the latest workout.

In my experience, despite the added qualification process, I end up with outrageously high HR Max because of data capture issue with the odd workout where I used the wrist HR, or where the HRM-Pro was dry at the beginning of a run.

If you add 5 bpm to your peak best-effort, about-to-lose-it 5k, you should have a great estimate. Another way is to do a field HR Max test, or to perform a maximal effort anaerobic workout and run the last interval all-out to exhaustion,  if your doctor let's you.

  • I reset back to 182, but somewhere between my reset and my run today, it has reverted back to 187. It seems it does not only take historical highs into account, but uses it without any filter. This means your heart rate can never be lower than your registered , historical max, even if it's 7 years old which it is in my case.

This seems like an obvious and easily correctable bug with something like auto adjusting historical high for age, but maybe I am missing something. Anyway, I will turn this feature of as it is clearly not working as it (imo) should.
