I'm working shifts, so I often take naps during the day. Often my watch is not recognizing them as sleep, so I'm wondering if it helps to put the watch manually in "Sleep mode"??
Does anyone have experience or tips about it?

Yes you can manually start for your sleep.
I'm a shift worker too. I prefer to use the automation.
955 and 945 worked for me when I changed the sleep schedule on the watch regularly.
265 new sleep format is a mess to me.
Thursday schedule seems to take effect on Wednesday.
