When you got your FR265, what was the first screen it presented when you started it or plugged it into power?

So I bought an FR265 from REI.  I brought it home and plugged it into power.

Normally, I'd expect it to bring me to some startup screen for a new user.

However, instead, it showed a timer screen with the timer paused.

I discarded the timer, and it took me to a Bike screen.

This is pretty weird.  Might it be that someone had tried it out and returned it? I wouldn't think so given REI would then have to sell it as used; this was purchased as a new item, and at least LOOKED undisturbed in its packaging.

  • NOTE: I looked at several unboxing videos, and they all went to the "Choose Language" screen when started; looks like someone had tried this out and returned it (possibly in the store); I'll be returning it. :-/

  • I had chose language then the screens to sync with phone , a QR code if I recall

  • Wasn't the box sealed when you bought ?

  • Yeah, that's what I would expect (the language screen anyway; the other one seems new)

  • Well it was closed, didn't look like it had been handled a lot, and the watch had the fake screen/screen protector on it.  But the box itself didn't have any seal on it (no plastic tape).  So it could have been opened and played with by anyone along the line.  I returned it, in any case, no problem (since REI is good with that kind of thing). They told me that it was probably returned and they put it on the wrong shelf (they keep their expensive items in the back).

  • FWIW, when I went to the Berkeley REI to look at devices, they were willing to unpack a watch and let me handle it to see the size, weight, and color. But they explicitly said they would not allow turning it on to demo anything, since it would come up in the initialization screens meant for the owner.

  • Good thing they accepted the return.

Mine was sealed when purchased. So not easy for me to prove and say it was already opened when I am home.

  • Maybe someone turned it on when they weren't looking? ;-)

  • Yeah, I'm happy about that.  I ordered another one from Garmin.

  • Well, they did stand right at my elbow the whole time. I would have had to be pretty obnoxious and shameless to ignore their guidance and go through the whole powerup and setup sequence anyway!

Too bad you didn't poke around in the watch more before returning it. Were there sensible user profile settings like age and weight? Other history like recorded activities or longer term metrics like respiration, resting heart rate, or HRV?  Wifi settings?

Did you say the battery was flat and you had to charge it in order to look at it?  My FR255 had a decent charge when I first powered it on and saw setup screens.  I don't think they would ship watches with dead batteries since they'd want it to have a decent shelf-life and not degrade like it could if starting off already depleted.

I don't have a touch screen so don't know... is it plausible that the watch could get past setup and into these other screens if it was powered on in the package and getting some phantom screen touches from being jostled around? I don't think it is plausible for buttons to get pressed from shaking since they are so firm and the watch so light.
