Critical flaw: the aggressive auto dimming makes this watch unusable during and outside of activities as well

During activities -after a timeout period- the display will be so dim that it is almost impossible to read. In some activities (such indoor rowing), activating the display with a gesture is not an option, so checking HR is basically impossible.

It is also a problem outside activities, because it makes hard to read even the time with just a glance on a display - you'd need to activate it with a gesture, and this makes the AOD completely irrelevant.

That's it, it will go back to garmin, because this way it is unable to

  • show my HR during activities
  • display the time in AOD

so it is completely useless as a sport watch and as a regular watch as well.

  • I noticed the screen is always on after sun set

Same issue: It's still dimmed, but when it's dark around you, that probably looks bright enough for your eyes.

the watch change from bright enough go to even brighter.

This is exactly where you can see: Screen was dimmed again and switches to full brightnes.

  • Forgot to tell; aod is off during activities, so I was really surprised to see it always on in the dark.

  • Devices that are suffering this disruption have a display that appears nearly completely black outside

Wrong. More precisely: there could be a different issue regarding the black screen - this could not affect every watch.

But the too strong dimming (again: to an extent that it is useless), affects every... damn... amoled... watch.

Exactly this type of reactions from Garmin shows that they don't even understand and / or realise and / or care about the seriousness of this issue.

  • All,

Those who believe their Forerunner 965 has a display that is dimming to a black screen, looking like it's even turned off, please reach out to your local Garmin Product Support center. While troubleshooting this with some users we have determined that many devices are functioning as expected and users are seeing the always-on display auto-dim, whereas others are seeing a hardware problem where the display is dimming to a nearly black screen The latter group has been small so far but we do understand that this is a significant disruption and are working on a permanent solution. Due to the two different experiences being crossed in this thread, and the fact that hardware troubleshooting/replacement (if necessary) cannot be handled in the forums, we will be closing this thread. While we are actively looking into these reports and investigating permanent solutions, we encourage anyone who believes they may be experiencing the dimming to work with their local support team in order to find the quickest and most appropriate solution. Thank you all for your contributions here and your patience as we have looked into this.
