Bug in structured Interval Trainings on a track

Good day,

I'm having issues with interval trainings, that I normally do on a track nearby. I'm doing this workouts since several years with my Garmin devices and never had issues.

My workouts (created in Garmin Connect) generally have the following structure:

> Warm-Up until Lap-Button pressed

> several intervals of x meters at a pace between y - z each with a recovery segment of some seconds or a minute in between

> Cool-Down until Lap-Button pressed

Since a couple of months I experience the following bug: I'm doing the Warm-Up and after I press the Lap-Button the first interval starts. Once that is complete the recovery segment starts, but it switches to the next interval way to early!

For example if I put it a recovery time of 1min after the interval, the next interval start in 30s or even less. Same happens if I use a distance as a recovery duration: instead of 400m recovery, the 2nd interval starts after 50m. The duration of the recovery interval seems to be completely random.

So normally I end the training and push the lap button manually for the interval and recovery segments.

But as I read that there's a fix "related to structured workouts" in the Software Update 14.17, I gave it another try today and created a "Test-workout" in which I hoped to not find the bug or at least discover any structure...

Basically that's how I create my workouts, I just put in a slow (walking) pace to be able to focus on what the watch is doing:

Unfortunately even after the Software Update, I experienced several bugs:

Fist of all there's a drop in pace to zero during the "Warm-Up"-segment, although I never stopped walking.

The the first "Recovery"-segment was exactly 34s instead of 1min.

Second "Recovery"-segment was 30s.

The third one only 17s.

What is funny though: In the overview, Garmin Connect is convinced my "Recovery"-segments ("Erholung") all were 1:00min, what is definitely wrong (see above).

There seems to be something really wrong and I'm wondering if it's my watch, I'm making a stupid mistake or do others also experience this big? If anyone of the Garmin Team is willing to have a look at the data in my account that would be highly appreciated!!!

I hope you can help me out!! :)

Best Regards,

Marc

  • Additional Info: I just tried the same workout in the "normal" running mode instead of the track mode. Its had none of the bugs above at all, so it seems to be an issue with the track mode only.

  • I have the same problem so would be keen for a response on this one.

    Thanks

    Dan

  • I am not even sure how to explain my bug, so I will just expand on this one.

My 5k PR is 23 minutes. This workout was no where near max, with more rest (due to bugs) than work intervals. Realistically, I only recall doing 5 intervals, even though the watch was set for 8.

Distance should have clocked in at +-5k.

I am guessing it was GPS errors that was smoothed out by track mode? But I was running SatIQ mode on an open field track, with no trees or high buildings to block signal. Also, the GPS track shows 0 signs of any deviation from the track. It should snap out if it wanders for more than a km from the track?

A month ago, I had the dreaded low HR bug, in hot weather, that didn't want to go away no matter what I tried. Had to restart the watch after the race to fix the issue.

Bugs for day to day usage is annoying, but we now have a situation where your runs are not recorded correctly? Should we all just go back to cheaper/simpler 245/55s?

  • Your average pace is 3:59, while your average grade adjusted pace is 6:20. Quite interesting, given that the total ascent of the entire workout was one meter. The watch indicates that you had a quite a few rests with average pace zero. They contribute to your low average pace, despite having a distance of zero.

  • I think track mode has many issues right now...I had similar runs with the bugs I mentioned in my first post and absurd "new PRs" like 50s for 1k. I really hope Garmin will react soon. :/

  • Can you please report this?

  • Yeah, so many things are wrong, it could be multiple bugs colliding with each other? GPS/Workout/Altimeter Bug? The track is IAAF Certified (MSUNDUZI ATHLETICS STADIUM PIETERMARITZBURG, CONIPUR MX+), so there should be 0 issues with shape/gradient.

I also did a couple of slow laps before the workout (recorded as a separate track run activity) to calibrate things. No issues when doing that activity.

  • Garmin still responding here??

  • Hello Marc,
I have the exact same problem while training on the track.

Last night, for example, I had 400m with 1 minute rest in between ... 1 minute became less than 15 seconds so I had to stop.

    Alex.

  • Thank you so much for the photos and detailed description.

For those who have also experienced this, I'm happy to add you to a report. Please just answer the following questions in case I need to reach out to gather details:

    1. May I have permission to email you?

    2. May I have permission to view your Connect account if necessary?

    3. In which country are you located?
