Not as promised battery life on 255s

Hi,

yes I know it maybe needs some time indexing and also a few battery charges before being on 100% but in the first 2 days I notice a not as promised battery life. During 2h of configuring everything mostly through the app I lost 15% of battery life. Really not good but I did a lot of stuff with syncing many times via BT.

Now it has been about 2 days using the watch. Only one 45 cardio workout and one 45min walk with multiband on which didn't even take THAT much battery and I lost 25% more in around 2 days being at 60%. I know multiband cuts the gps battery life half but it was only 45min. And mostly not around many houses or trees.

One thing to say is system brightness is very low on this device compared to my Fenix 6s Pro. When I need 20% on my 6s Pro I have 40% configured here for almost same brightness. I have BT turned off all the time, only twice a days turning it on for sync then off again. I have the device in airplane mode almost all the time. And I don't use pulseOX at all, have it turned to manually. The only thing taking battery life down is GPS Multiband which I don't use daily and mostly for around 45min when walking each second day. And 40% brightness because screen seems less bright then other device like my Fenix 6s Pro.

Calculating this it would take me only to 8 days with one 45min workout each day. That is not the 12 days mentioned. And I barely use anything draining the battery.

What about you other 255(s) users? Do you get the battery life promised, minus settings and maybe a day here or there with one charge?

Do you think it will get to normal after a few weeks like many claim with phones?

  • Mine is estimating 7 days remaining ( I just turned on battery estimates as usuallyl I just use percentage)

7 days is unrealistic with my heavy GPS usage patterns so if I assume 3.5 days max I think I will be needing to charge once a week (which I am fine with)

  • 2% lost since last post 3 hours ago - including 1 hours Indoor ride connected to Favero Assimo Duo power meters + Wahoo Kickr via ANT FE-C  trainer providing distance / speed. Used built in HRM.

Can't believe a low end Forerunner works with power meters and FE-C native trainers btw. I am loving this watch tbh.

  • Well I wouldn't call 400$/€ low end. ;-) Esp when high end costs 500$!!!!

Low end would be 200$ FR55. But indeed nice that they upgraded it with many new features.

  • Yeah I guess so.

I bought the Epix 2 on launch and that cost 3x the price and was a big 'meh!!' as the kids say, so in that context its low end :)

  • This morning mine estimated 4 days remaining (was 7 days estimated this time yesterday)

8% used in about 24 hours according to the battery percentage value.

  • Weird, can't be true if it declined it really 8% than it would be 6 days remaining. But remaining battery status is also deifned by current usage. If you just enable BT and other stuff it takes this exact setting to calculate. If you turn stuff off, the next moment battery days remaining will incline too.

After the reset yesterday everything is going normal again. I lost battery in 1days of around 8-10% with 1h of GPS activity (multiband off) and 45min cardio,. Everything turned off in almost all settings and no CIQ apps. So I guess there really was something weird going on before the hardreset. Sometimes it is useful to do so. Esp with battery problems.

  • Yes the 7 to 4 day drop over 1 day makes no sense - now I remember why I don't usually use estimates just the % figure!

Today I did 40 minutes indoor riding with power meter, ANT-C trainer and wrist HR then a 45 minute run with wrist HR + All Systems + multiband.

So it will be interesting to see my battery % tomorrow morning - for me taking the official Garmin estimates then dividing by 2 seems true for me as always with my usage patterns.

  • Estimate dropped from 4 days to 2 since yesterday.

If I run tomorrow, I will need to recharge before I do.

As I said, Garmin estimates for me I instantly divide by 2 as they seem over-optimistic to put it politely!

  • I will sent the watch back.

It is getting ridicolous. So on tuesday I reseted the watch and everything was back to normal. I lost around 8% in one day, 24h ago I had around 80% and during the day around 70% with only one 30min GPS walk (non multiband), no other workout, everything turned off, airplane mode. I woke up and now have 20% left. If this was one time issue ok, I would reset, but I don't do 2 resets in 3 days because of battery problems and other bugs (airplane mode not working even so it is showing turned on, before the first reset).

I don't know if it is software or the watch has a defect. But I will use my Fenix 6s Pro again. Annoying, very annyoing. I maybe could through analysis find out what was going on but this is not my problem and this is not what I want to do all the time. Maybe software updates will resolve this problem, I am for the time being done with the otherwise nice 255s.

  • I am not dissapointed as when the specs said 14 days then I expected 6 to 7 days max - that is par for the course with Garmin I find since the Fenix 5.

The very rapid drain issue is something that seems to plauge Garmin - it has always appeared to be a software issue, not a hardware issue to me because it often seems to appear after a firmware update.
