Do the training plans take account of sex and age?

I have recently followed Greg's Half Marathon plan and as I was nearing the end of a 16 week training period, I really began to wonder whether the training plan was realistic for me (A woman, aged 58).  There were regular goal pace runs but the period of harder running was often only 30 minutes with a 15 minutes warm up and cool down. As an older woman, I don't cover much ground during such a short period.  I fell over 10 minutes short of my goal of 2:12 for the HM in my race yesterday. Some of this was due to the very warm day, but I do think that the plan would have been better if I had done more Long Slow Runs.  I have significant DOMS today which I didn't get last year when I followed a different plan and achieved a time of 2hrs 10mins.

I always stick rigorously to the training plan (forgoing other enjoyable events with running friends) so I am doubly annoyed that the plan didn't get me fit enough to reach my goal.

Have any other older women found this?

  • I'm close to your age and I find the training plan warmups way too short. I run until I'm warmed up, *then* start the workout, including its measly warm up.  I think every person is different, regardless of age and gender, and that the watch tends to be overoptimistic about race times.
