No spoken instructions when doing workout

Is the 245 Music supposed to give spoken instructions when doing a workout? 

I'm sure I've had this working in the past where it would give commands like "Run for 2 km" or "Cool down for 5 minutes" as you went through the different stages of the workout. I know it comes up on the screen but my eyesight isn't good enough to always be able to read the screen.

I get the end of lap times without any problems. Workout alerts are enabled.

    Hi, I have this watch.  Do you use earphones connected directly to the watch?  From what I recall you only get spoken periodic time/distance/hr updates (if selected) if listening through earphones connected to your mobile.  Curiously to get the spoken instructions you need to listen via earphones connected to the watch via Bluetooth.

    Thanks. You're spot on there. If I pair the headphones to my watch instead of my phone then it tells me what to do for each step.

    Looks like I lose all the phone functionality then? No answering calls or streaming music. I'd have to download tracks manually or pay for Spotify Premium.

    I'm not sure.  Can the earphones connect to more than one source?
