Can you go back to watch face when lap key is enabled?

  • When performing an activity with the lap key enabled, it it possible to go back to the watch face during the activity, or are the back/lap functions mutually exclusive?

I use the manual lap key to mark sections of cycling / running activities, say commuting to a trailhead vs. riding or running the trail itself. These aren't suitable for auto-lap; I need to manually mark milestones that are important to me along the way. The lap key feature works great for this.

Sometimes, however, I'd like to get back to the watch face during these activities and can't figure out how to do it (easily). For example, I might get a text message while I'm in traffic and can't safely read it before the pop-up notification on the watch expires. (I know that I can change the linger time for the pop-up.) In that case, I may want to check messages (or calendar, or whatever) from the main watch face when I get to a safe spot during my activity.

The only way I've found to get back to the watch face when the lap key is enabled is to stop the activity and use "Resume Later". It works, but it's cumbersome. If there's an alternative way to either 1) go back when the lap key is enabled, or 2) mark laps manually without enabling the lap key, I'd appreciate knowing how to do it.

Thanks!
