Forerunner 245 - HITT - Cardio Workout - Reps

So it turns out the Forerunner 245 does not support HIIT workouts. So I thought I would create a Cardio Interval workout. I just want to do some intervals on the gym bike.

So I created a Cadio Workout in the ConnectIQ app.

Simple workout with warmup, some circuit intervals and cool down.

But when I download and start this on the watch I get the following screen:

Huh, the default screen shows Reps. For an Stationary Bike?

So what sort of Reps do people normally do on a Stationary Bike?

Now I can create a custom Data Screen - but all I can get is Timer (elapsed time not a count down) and HR.

Its the same sorry story when the completed Cardio Interval/Circuit training is completed and shown in ConnectIQ:

Reps and Weights? For a Cadio session? On a stationary bike?

Anyone managed to create a Cadio Interval Workout on the Gamin Forerunner 245 that doesn't have Reps?

  • Seems like Cardio is a bit generic and means reps of weights, so I tried to create a Bike Workout

Now the activity screen looks like this:

Steps on a Bike? I think they may mean "Step" as in "Segment"?

But still cannot get Heart Rate and Segment Timer on the same screen.

The downloaded app to data to ConnectIQ makes more sense though:

Also if I landscape and scroll a long way across I get HR for segment. (Its a stationary bike with no interface with Garmin so speed, distance etc are not recorded).

  • I had that same problem too. It was fixed in a later firmware release. If it's not working for you and you have the latest firmware release then try doing a factory reset.

    Hope this helps!

    Blain

  • A possibly better way is to use Custom Workout

Convoluted way of getting this on the watch. Create an "Other" Activity on the watch and then Custom Workouts will be available to select.

This gives an ok on watch screen - still cannot get segment countdown timer and HR on same screen though.

Syncs ok to app - but oddly no HR info is given for each segment. (Even if you turn to landscape mode and see all stats). HR does show per lap on the website, but not the mobile app.

    Not great.

  • Ideally I wanted a screen with HR and Timer on like this:

I tried to write my own custom data field screen, but is seems the Garmin API does not expose the current step/segment/interval timer, so it does not seem to be possible.

  • there are multiple HIIT or even Tabata apps in the store, try them, hopefully one will do what you need

  • Thanks, I had a look and there were some interesting apps. Most cram a lot of info on one screen, which is great if you are a youngster.

In the end I adapted one of my existing apps to give me what I wanted.

Screens easy to read when the heart is hammering in the HIIT active session.

I record a simple activity which gives me heart rate and lap (interval) time:

So it works with any type of exercise.

Maybe not as sophisticated as some apps out there but gives me what I want - easy to read HR and Interval time on same screen.
