Watch recording distance inaccurate

245, 1.5 yrs old. Last pm, mile repeats grossly off on distance - so pace recorded was approx 1 min/mile slow. At end of run, match was over a half mile off in distance on a 10 mile run. It seemed worse first half of rum then second half. What do you think - satellite problem, or is watch getting used up and i need a new one. Obviously if pave /distance are not more accurate. It is non-functional.

  • Are you running in an area with lots of trees or buildings? They can mess the GNSS/GPS accuracy. Are you using just GPS or GPS/Glonass or GPS/Galileo (The last two may help)?

  • Look at the course map generated on Garmin Connect. Can you see where the recorded track deviated from your actual route? As JonH mentions, signal reflections from buildings can generate big GPS errors, though trees aren't often a problem. The comments about GPS/Glonass and GPS/Galileo are also good advice. In addition, are you sure you had a good satellite lock when you started the run?

And how can you be sure that the 10 miles you're using as a benchmark is accurate? If it was on a track, then GPS errors are guaranteed because the watch will not perfectly trace the smooth curve of the oval.

Also, has this been happening frequently, or is it just a one-off? Occasionally these glitches happen, but if it's frequent then it's a problem. Though I doubt it means the watch is "getting used up."

  • thanks guys.  the map route is fascinatingly screwed up.  I know the benchmark because i have run that 10 mile loop countless times.  it is a running trail around a lake that has more trees on the west side, but i run there all the time with little disruption in the watch - nothing like yesterday.  there are no buildings.  Picture one is a screenshot of the route from last week with the watch working properly.   screenshot two is last night, where it doesnt even record the west side of the lake, though it was giving me te inaccurate splits while i was over there.  I am using GPS/Glonass as my satellite setting.  it has me running in a dead straightline across the water until about mile five.  ha!  really weird.  this is a one off last night.  I thought about halfway through run it corrected and started to work.  but that is pretty bad.

  • also, I had the green light that I was fully linked before I started the run, if that is helpful at all.

  • Yeah, I've had that happen occasionally with my FR245 and previously with my FR220. But I'd estimate less than once per 1-2 years. As you've probably guessed, it seems to have lost the satellite connection for a while, and then when it found you again the software drew a straight line between the point of disconnect and the point of reconnect.

I wouldn't worry about it unless it starts happening more frequently. For now, just consider yourself lucky you didn't drown. Or pat yourself on the back for running your mile repeats so fast that you can run on water  ;-)

  • thanks guys.  I will give it a few more runs and see if i have consistent problems.  Hopefully it was just a fluke and it will go back to normal.
