performance condition

In the past it was a guessing game as to how my run would ultimate rate with respect to Performance Condition

Not being aware of the ability to view the PC as a data screen, I never was able to see it in real-time

Recently I change the data screen on my watch to display three measures only:

Pace

Heart Rate

Performance Condition

What's nice about this is that I can see the PC change over the course of my run, and dial it in as I run.

My thought is that if I always run with Performance Condition at 0.0 or above, my training will benefit.

Is this correct?

  • No, you got it all wrong.

Performance condition tells you if you perform at/below/above your current fitness level. A negative value means, that the watch thinks you are running worse than expected, zero means you run as expected, and a positive value means that you run faster than expected at the current heart rate. There is very little point to pay attention to performance condition while running, and even less to try to keep it at zero.

  • I guess that's right. Here is some info that I found as well

    https://www.garmin.com/en-US/garmin-technology/running-science/physiological-measurements/performance-condition/

"In addition to the alert during the first part of your run, you can add performance condition as a data field to your training screens — and keep an eye on it as your run unfolds.

The resulting number is a real-time assessment of the deviation from your baseline VO2 max, with each point on the scale representing about 1% of your VO2 max.

This is an objective way to keep an eye on how your ability to perform is or isn’t declining as you go, because it’s telling you if your body is working harder than normal to run at your current pace."

  • Does anyone still get the alert during a run? Mine stopped showing following the last update.

  • On 10.40 still got it (I've just ran once with this version)
