50 course point max exceeded, final x points will not be shown

Hi all,

there are quite some posts on this forum about the "50 course point max exceeded, final x points will not be shown" message. It seems a lot of people are struggling with it and I can't seem to figure it out as well.
My plan is to start with ultra-trails but it appears that even a trail of 28k seems too much for my watch (FR245).
I have tested 4 scenarios and only 1 scenario works as I expect it to.

Scenario 1:

  1. Let the Garmin Connect App generate random course of about 80k
  2. Save the course as "Scenario 1"
  3. Send it to my FR245
  4. Start an activity on my FR245
  5. Load and start the "Scenario 1" course

Works like a charm: no errors or warnings.

Scenario 2:

  1. Download a GPX of a shorter (28k) track from internet
  2. Import as course in https://connect.garmin.com (Google Maps)
  3. Save the course as "Scenario 2"
  4. Open Garmin Connect App
  5. Open the "Scenario 2" course
  6. Send it to my FR245
  7. Start an activity on my FR245
  8. Start the "Scenario 2" course

Error/Warning message: "50 course point max exceeded, final x points will not be shown"

Scenario 3:

  1. Start with the GPX as in scenario 2
  2. Import as course in https://connect.garmin.com (OpenStreetMaps)
  3. Save the course as "Scenario 3"
  4. Open Garmin Connect App
  5. Open the "Scenario 3" course
  6. Send it to my FR245
  7. Start an activity on my FR245
  8. Start the "Scenario 3" course

Error/Warning message: "50 course point max exceeded, final x points will not be shown"

Scenario 4:

  1. Download a GPX of a shorter (e.g. 28k) track from internet
  2. Import as course in Garmin Connect App (by opening the GPX selecting Garmin Connect App)
  3. Save the course as "Scenario 4"
  4. Send it to my FR245
  5. Start an activity on my FR245
  6. Start the "Scenario 4" course

Error/Warning message: "50 course point max exceeded, final x points will not be shown"
Splitting the "Scenario 4" course into two 14k parts leaves me with two courses that still yield the above mentioned error message.

For now I decided to split my 28k course into two parts and manually reduce the number of points so stay below the 50-point limit. Not exactly my ideal process for importing gpx files...
I just don't get it why a course of 28k apparently is a problem for the FR245 and a course of 80k is not.
Could anyone please explain how to handle (longer) trails? Or point me to usefull documentation on this topic?
Anyone from Garmin can comment on this?

  • Unfortunately, the Garmin turn-by-turn feature on FR245 is really  not mature:

    - there is the 50 course point limitation

    - also in 1 out of 10 navigations I face the problem that the screen freezes and I have to restart the watch to continue...

For a company that sells professional navigation systems this is really poor!

As an alternative to any workaround procedure that might work or not I recommend to use the DWMap app - there is no 50 course point limitation and I never saw the watch freezing.

  • Clearly the 80K has fewer points than your 28K route. Garmin knows about this limit and it is very likely part of their routing algorithm to minimize the numbers of points and stay below.
