Movement is a factor for determining sleep. If you are lying in bed reading and don't move the watch much you will be considered to be sleeping.
The watch can't know what you are doing. It just uses its sensors trying to make a guess what you are doing.
Hi thanks for taking the time to reply but my Fitbit which this watch replaced just recently recorded my sleep with incredible accuracy and knew exactly when I was awake or asleep so assumed the Garmin would be as sophisticated. If there’s a way of improving it’s sensitivity then I’d be happy as the watch’s other functions are excellent and provide a much better health assessment in most other areas. I’m a poor sleeper and I was hoping the watch would provide me with some additional insight.
For people having sleep problems the bed should only be used for sleeping and not for reading (maybe for a short session like 20 minutes) and absolutely not any phone, computer or TV usage. Don't even have the phone, computer or TV in the bed room.

There is no setting to make the watch ignore you lying still in bed.
There is no easy fix to sleeping problems. You have to make some changes in your life and not everyone is ready for it. Just like with health in general. Exercise regularly, don't eat too much, rest enough. Everyone knows what to do, but most people continue to search for the quick fix.

Reality is the 245 is really bad at detecting sleep, i had it for 3 years and had it read even 12 hours of sleeping because i was on the couch staying still reading and then gone to bed, result being the watch reading i was sleeping from the moment i was reading till the moment i've gone to bed.
I switched to the fenix 6 which has the new sleeping algorithm, it's better, really better, but still not perfect, it goes wrong from time to time by 10 minutes before or after bed, but still a huge leap forward.
I can't talk about sleeping phases accuracy.
In the meantime seems like the "improved" the sleep detection with the new update, try it and see if it's better, i have no idea if it means they updated it to the same algorithm as fenix 6/7 etc...

My advice comes from the Christian Benedics: https://www.benedictlab.org/christian-benedict
From his team studies, publications and metastudies.
Again, it's not a matter of if that's a good advice or not, it's not an asked advice, the guy is asking why the sleep detection functionality is bad, not how to improve his sleeping quality.
On a sidenote reading a book while being still in bed, on the couch, on a chair, is not bad and doesn't have an impact on your sleeping or life quality, why are you assuming bad life habits from the OP? Studies even show that reading before bed eases stress and help sleeping.
Why are you even giving life or health advice in a thread where someone is just asking if it's normal that the sleeping detect is bad?
One could even want to keep having bad habits and still have a decent sleep detection, that's not our job to judge, the watch should be able to detect your bad habits and show the results, its job is not to detect the best possible scenario, considering that other brands but even other watches from garmin does it better.
