Why is resting heart rate calculated midnight to midnight

It looks like my resting heart rate is calculated from midnight to midnight. This isn’t really very useful. For instance if your heart rate is elevated due to overtraining or sickness, it might be elevated when I check my resting heart rate in the morning. This is good to know.

but…

Say I recover that day, my watch then combines my rhr from bed time too midnight, with my elevated one from midnight to wake up the previous morning. So if you look back at your day, the elevated rhr is no longer apparent as it has averaged lower.

what would be better is if rhr is calculated for the whole period of time you are asleep. Yes, it would include data from the previous day (I.e. before midnight) but that is actually a more relevant and useful indicator for how to train today.
