Turn prompts for navigation along courses: Garmin connect courses work, Komoot courses do not work

Hi everybody!

I use a 245 watch with software version 8.30. The creation of courses with Garmin connect and Komoot works well. Also, the synchronization of the courses with the watch works well inboth cases. When using navigation along such a course during an activity, the watch shows turn prompts. If the course has been created with Garmin connect the turn prompts will be super accurate. I tested multiple courses and the position error of the turn prompt is typically below 5 or 10 meters. But…

If an identical course is created with Komoot instead of Garmin connect, the turn prompts of the watch will be wrong. This is what happens, see pictures attached:

  1. A turn prompt typically appears too early although the GPS navigation is correct. See picture 1: Although there is about 250 m to go (which is correct), the turn prompt says: “turn in 93 m”.
  2. When there is still about 150 m to go, the turn prompt says: “turn now”.
  3. After this, even without really having turned, the turn prompt falsely indicates that the user is already on the next course segment and shows the distance to the next turn.

The pictures show that the GPS-based positioning on the course map is always correct. Only the turn prompts are wrong. To me, this looks like a software bug upon creating turn prompts for Komoot-based maps.

Anybody and idea? Anybody else more luck than me?

  • I'm surprised that you get navigation prompts with komoot at all.

I don't get any - at least not with komoot offline routing on my watch

  • The answer to the problem is very simple and can be found on the Komoot website: "Turn-by-turn navigation arrows: At the moment, no Garmin devices are capable of showing turn-by-turn navigation arrows on the device screen when using the IQ app only. If your device contains maps and is able to recalculate the route, the Tour will be adapted to the Garmin maps. In this case you will see the instruction arrows provided by Garmin." The Forerunner 245 does not have maps. That's it. It does not finally explain why slightly wrong instructions come  up but OK.

  • The answer seems to be to not use the Komoot app on the watch. It isn't needed anyway as routes created in Komoot will get pushed to Garmin Connect into 'Courses' (assuming you have Garmin and Kommot linkied), which you can then follow as if it were a Garmin course.
