changing between optical hrm and chest measurement (hrm-run)

I want to using the chest strap at times and optical at other times. I know how to pair the chest strap. If I am wearing it will it automatically override the optical? If not what should I do to use the chest strap and then what do I do to turn it back to optical?

Yes, but only if you register a timed activity. For 24/7 heart rate measurement the optical sensor is used.
