pace dropouts and no cadence

Hi everyone. I've got a new 245 and on Connect my pace is missing occasionally within a run, and my cadence is zero. But bizarrely the resulting map is fine, the total mileage is accurate, and the watch counts my steps towards the daily goal.

See below: I was actually moving about 7:30 min/mile throughout the entire activity -- no long standing break near the end. How do I fix this???  Also, the orange line is my cadence, solid zero through the entire run.

Here's a segment of the resulting run.  The blue lines correspond to the dropout sections of the run graph above. So the watch knows I was moving geocoordinates but it can't communicate the correct pace data to Connect.

Also FWIW, I've had Garmin watches for 10+ years (forerunner 110, 220, and 235) so I'm not a Garmin novice. But the 245 is new to me.

  • Why do you think the steps during the time you see the cadence dropped to 0 are counted? I don't think so.

I think that either you have a problem with the step sensor or that it could be caused by the position of your hand (I know this is not the best example for running, but when I push a baby stroller then the steps are not counted, because the watch doesn't feel the "hits", but of course this doesn't have any effect on the GPS so the map and distance are still correct. Similar thing might happen if you put your hand in your pocket for a few seconds or if you hold a bottle of water or drink during the run)

  • I know the steps are counted because my daily step count increases while I'm running.   So the cadence graph is a solid line at zero, but the number of steps in the the My Day activity tracker increases as expected (~1k steps per mile of running).

Thanks for the response though, I'm still troubleshooting this, although I have had success by restarting my watch daily (which is a crummy workaround for a $300 product).

  • but in the 1st pic you posted the cadence isn't zero for the whole run it's only dropped a few times for a few minutes (at least that's what I assume that the cadence is the gray shadow, because the picture is so small I can't read anything on it)

  • In the first pic, cadence is the orange line which is a flat zero. Red is HR, and the gray/shadow element with the dropouts is my pace. The pictured run was 80 minutes, so the longest pace dropouts near the end covered about a 10 minute span.

  • So I guessed it correctly, and then I say it again: I bet that when the cadence is 0 then it didn't count any steps.

  • you might find this interesting:  Here's a graph of my steps for that day. You can see the lime green line which are my accumulated steps during the day, which increases by about 15k steps during the mid-day run that I posted images above at the top of the thread. So yes indeed the steps are being counted even though Connect is reporting a cadence of zero (orange line in first image). Weird!

  • ok, this is really weird

  • Mine too.

Garmin will not bother fixing this.

  • Hello, we are currently in the process of rolling out a software version to resolve issues related to cadence data not being recorded on the watch.

    Forerunner 245 - Software Version 8.30

    • Fix an issue on non-music devices that could cause disruption of various metrics after being connected to a computer. Some of the affected items were cadence, stress, and body battery.

This software is currently at 50% and is being rolled out on our normal roll out schedule.
