Should we manually cleanup the activities directory?

I have a new Forerunner 245 and I'm wondering if I'm supposed to cleanup the /Garmin/Activity folder. It contains a lot of .fit files and I'm wondering: how is the retention / cleanup happening in this directory? Can I safely delete the files after successful sync of the watch?

  • Manual cleanup should not be necessary. The watch will automatically remove oldest files when running out of storage.

  • Thanks; but my wife also nas a 245 and that watch often is "out of storage". So that auto-cleaning does not happen on her watch. I have to manually delete the .fit files there.

  • How does your wife sync the activities? How often?

Also, please bear in mind that storage space can be occupied not only by activity files, but also by courses, workouts and possibly some other stuff.

  • She normally syncs using the iOS app only.
Every now and then I sync using the cable on my mac.

but... good to know that data-retention / cleanup should be done automatically.
I'll keep an eye on this.

  • I like to move mine from the watch to a laptop and delete off the watch once a week or so. I am aware there is no need to do this but I like to keep a backup of the fit files. After all, hard as it Hushedis to credit but any company can be hit by ransomware Hushed

  • True, good advice. Thanks.
One final question: you make the assumption that if the watch is synced the garmin app (so mobile only), that all activities are correctly uploaded to the Garmin servers, right?
