Heart monitor issues

I have a Garmin 245, and over the last two months I started getting spikes in HRM. Three quarters of the way through a 10 mile run my heart rate would go from 134 to 178 or higher without a change in my pace. This obviously throws off my data. Is there a way to correct this issue?

  • The only way I found to get resonable values was to buy an external Polar OH1+ HRM and connect the 245 to that

  • I would hope Garmin could correct the issue, instead of adding a device to the watch. It was working properly then suddenly started spiking. I've cleaned, powered it down, checked for updates nothing seems to correct it.

  • It is right to hope that but they haven't for over a year now. As I had perfectly good experiences with optical wrist HR on two previous Garmin watches I can only presume that the 245 hardware is no good.

  • Get yourself OH1( or newer Vanity Sense) sensor...the one on just 245 works randomly..

  • There seems to be an echo in here

  • I've used OHR devices for a while and in my experience their accuracy does not change over time.

For me the 245's OHR it's been the best I've used so far (coming from MiO fuse, mio Alpha 2, TomTom spark 3 and Coros Pace 2). In fact it's the only device that has given me decent readings while swimming.

If you haven't changed the way you wear it (I would suggest moving it upper on your arm while exercising) or the environment temperature I would think there is an issue with your device and therefore would contact Garmin

  • Thank you for your input

  • I even have the same issue when I'm working on my desk. For some reason, the heart rate goes up to 150-170 in spikes 3-7 times a day, and I get warnings. My real heart rate is steadily +- 70.  This also throws off my daily and weekly data. I did not find a way to correct this, and I do not want to wear an external sensor all the time...
