When running with the Garmin Coach program the watch shows a Pace Gauge with the green and red bars. They indicate the target pace interval for the current workout.
During the run the gauge has a nice responsive moving average to determine the current pace and keep you between the minimum and maximum pace.
It takes a little while (minute+) to get a stable reading, I assume smoothing out the pace determined from the GPS requires enough data points, this is fine.
However when the first program step has finished and goes on to the next step (typically an optional run) then the gauge completely has to re-establish the current pace, while as a runner I keep the same pace. This process triggers many warnings reporting to you that you go too fast since the average is not yet stable. Just ignoring it and trusting your own rhythm is fine since the gauge then becomes stable again after a minute or so and displays the current pace.
I think the usability of the watch could be improved to keep on calculating the current pace moving average between the steps, this way the data points and smooth average are not discarded and makes a transition from the mandatory run step to the optional part of the run seamless.
As a side note this behavior also becomes visible when using the PacePro feature when transitioning from one split to another (for example when using a negative split). Each new split requires the watch to re-establish a smooth current pace.
