Suggested workouts: 3 weeks of base only

I've been using suggested workouts on my 245M for the past three weeks.  I've only been given either 33, 36 or (once) 46 min base runs.  I've been sticking with the suggestions with one exception - I did a 1hr bike ride with my edge 530.

Initially my training status went unproductive and I dropped a notch pm VO2 (probably making it more accurate so no worries here) but now back into productive for the last week.

Should I just keep running these base runs or has something gone wrong? I feel like I must be losing top end speed.

  • This thread is very old, but I though I would respond since maybe the technology for the suggested workouts change during this time as well.

My experience is very similar to many of those mentioned where I followed the daily suggested workouts very strictly, and for the first month and a half, it was almost just slow and recovery runs (both of which was MUCH slower) than what many would consider easy runs. My VO max dropped by 2 during this time which has been very consistent for the past year and my race prediction times also plummeted. I saw this as more of a correction in my watches estimation of my fitness than a drop in fitness and did not worry about it too much.

I stayed with the programme and after about 2 months all my stats started making another turn and started improving again. VO2 max is up to where it started but at a steep incline so will likely be passing the original value in a couple of days. My race prediction times have improved and is better than what is was before starting the programme. I also feel very fresh everyday and have started enjoying my runs more. Some of my smaller joint aches and pains which I previously just considered as part of running has also either reduced or dissapeared completely.

I will add that during this time I was also very strict with getting proper rest every night. Made a point to stay away from any technology after 9 and forced myself to go to bed early and get a solid 7 to 8 hours of sleep every night.

With that said I suggest sticking with it for at least three months. Fitness is a slow burn and you need to give the programme time to do its magic.  Also stick with the suggested heart rates and paces and do not try and go faster than recommended. Trust the system, take recovery serious and I think you will likely see the results follow.

  • Thanks for the feedback.

I was starting to ask myself the same thing.
But I will stick to the suggested workouts for now then

  • I never did have an awful lot of luck with the Forerunner 245 suggested workouts so didn't really use them much at all after this post.  I now have a Forerunner 955 (mainly for navigation on trail runs) and the suggestions are so much better.  Not sure if the update was implemented on the 245, but on the new watches you can input an event, and the watch gives suggested workouts leading up to that event.  You can see the next 7 days suggested workouts too which is so much better.  I run really early in the morning, and with the 245 I couldn't see what would be suggested for the next day so had no idea how much time I would need, now I can check the whole weeks workouts, and they are much more varied, Sprints, Tempos, Base Runs, Recovery runs, Threshold etc.  Really impressed with the new version.
