No heart rate alerts

I have set the upper heart rate alert in the running settings to 149bpm (B4), the lower heart rate is off.

Still, I am not getting any heart rate alerts.

When I follow my Garmin coach plan, the watch shows the pace, remaining interval time and distance on the main screen, so I don't know the heart rate. Therefore I would like to be alerted when my rate rate is reaching B5. However, I never get any alert.

It did work at the beginning, but not any more since a couple of weeks. I was running 6.20 and now 6.85.

Has anyone seen the same? Any resolution?

  • If you are following a Garmin Coach Plan you won't receive external alerts. This is because the watch prioritizes the workouts alerts. For example, let's say my long run pace is 7:10-7:30, or zone 2 which is 140-150 bpm. If I forget to turn that alert off, and I schedule a guided workout that has a 5 minute warm up @ zone 1 or 7:30-8:00 pace a 10 minute zone 2 segment, then a 30 minute zone 3 segment then a 10 minute zone 1 segment, if the external alert were to have it's way I'd be running too low in the first segment, the second segment it would be in lock step, but in the third step it would say I was too high even though I'm in zone. To prevent that from happening, by design if you have a guided workout you are following the watch should not allow for external alerts.

  • Ok, I get that. But then it would be convenient if I could see the current pace (as suggested by the workout plan) and the current heart rate on one screen. Currently, when I stay on the first screen of the workout plan, I see my pace as a gauge and it shows me whether I am too fast or too slow. However, there is no heart rate on that screen. Of course I can add more screens, but then I can‘t see my pace any more. The pace on the workout screen is the interval pace, which is not selectable anywhere else.

My idea behind is: follow the workout guidance in terms of pace, but reduce pace if my heart rate goes beyond a certain frequency. This is only possible by switching between screens at the moment, which is inconvenient.

  • I think thats difficult to do, since the training plan uses pace as the metric and not heart rate. the garmin coach plans will only use pace and if you slow down you will start getting pace alerts until you get back into range. most running plans make you choose one or the other. even if you create your own workout, you cant choose 2 metrics for alerts

  • It would be sufficient to show the heart rate on the first screen, so I could see it while the main piece of incormation is the pace. No heart rate alert is then required.
