Suggested workouts paces!

Installed the beta yesterday and was curious about the suggested workouts. While the workouts suggested over the 2 days are okay, they are Base workouts. However at a pace thats actually more tempo pace for me. Wanted to hear more from others and keep this thread on to track if it gets better over time.

  • For me it fits I think. I run normaly at 6:00min/km to 6:30min/km between 5k and 15k. Yesterday suggestion was 30min workout at 6:15min/km. Yesterday it was 45min i think.

  • Thinking my easy pace is ~10:00 min/mi but was suggested a 8:45 min/mi base run.
    I.e. instead of 6:15 min/km its suggesting 5:27 min/km

  • Jeet, do your race predicted times seem too fast? The Daily Suggested Workout function works off of these factors.

    • Training Status
    • Training Load and Load Focus
    • VO2 Max value
    • Recovery Time
    • Sleep data
    • Profile of recently performed workouts

It would stand to reason then that if your pace seems to fast for your easy runs that your race predictions seem too fast as well being based off of the following metrics:

"The watch will use the VO2 max. estimate and your training history to provide a target race time. The watch analyzes several weeks of your training data to refine the race time estimates."

If that's the case more than likely your VO2 max is being overestimated. This is most likely due to either Max Heart Rate being set to high which causes the watch to think that the RPE is lower than it actually is. You could do a couple of things: You could lower the Max Heart Rate on your watch which will cause your VO2 Max to lower, your race prediction times, and your easy run pace to drop.

If you feel like your race predictor times are about right, then keep in mind the workouts are based on a range. Just because it says 8:45 doesn't mean you have to run 8:45. There is some wiggle room either direction, usually roughly 30 seconds either way.

Finally you can also set up your target based off of heart rate. Personally that's how I treat my recovery/base days. I check to see what pace it want's then I'll switch it to heart rate and I'll try and keep it in the heart rate zone while trying to stay in that 30 second window of the zone. For instance if it wants a 34 minute recovery run at 8:00 it tells me it wants 34 minutes at 130 bpm, and I just mentally won't let myself go faster than 7:30, and I hope I'm not running slower than 8:30, though to be honest heart rate on those days is my number one target so if it's 8:45 for that run so be it, it's not the end of the world. The key to remember is just getting time in on the road on your base and recovery days is the most important part. The most important part is to be recovered so on those critical workouts, your VO2 Max your sprint workouts, your anaerobic workouts to be able to hit the pace for those workouts.

  • Hi Garmin-Brooks. My FR245M does have some serious issues with the VO2 max estimate. First things first, my details like weight, height, age,... are all set correctly (just like my max heart rate). I also use the HRM-Run so the heart rate details are very accurate.

The issue is that my FR245M NEVER changes the estimated VO2 max by over 0,5. I have seen it drop with around 5-10 points for some people after they haven't run for a while. My VO2 max estimate is always (literally always) around 58-59 (which is way too high). Runalyze says my VO2 max is around 45-50. If I haven't run for like 3 months, Runalyze says it's around 40 and after I started running again for 2-3 months, it's around 50. However, even if I haven't been running for 6 months, my FR245M still says my VO2 max is 58-59. It never drops below 58 or never drops with a value over 0,5. This isn't normal right?

It has been this way since I got it over a year ago.

  • Fits for me. Good Job, Garmin, thank you! Slight smile

  •  Why Yes, my race predicted times are actually too fast. I had set my max heart rate based off a high heart rate auto detect on the watch. I also use a heart rate strap, but I cannot recall if I used one back when the max heart rate was set. do you recommend lowering it to the default 220-age formula ?

  •  I believe the vo2max on runalyze is not the same as it takes running efficiency into account. its not an apples to apples comparison with the garmin numbers.

  • While I haven't installed the new beta update, I want to second what you've said about VO2max numbers being far too high. When I bought the watch ~8 months ago it gave me a VO2max value of 55 and it has only gone up or down 1-2. I know for a fact that my VO2max is not that high as I generally run 9-10min aerobic miles and runalyze gives me a much more reasonable VO2max of 40-45. Like you, my height, weight etc are correct. Really not sure why it's so off for some people, while others seem to have reasonable VO2max estimates.

  • Yes, I know but my VO2 max shouldn't stay at 59 after I haven't run for 6 months...

  • So we have the exact same issue... , can you look into this?
