using power meter recorded data on the forerunner on garmin connect

I have a garmin forerunner 245 and a powermeter garmin vector 3?

After buying the powermeter I realized that although in theory these two systems being compatible (both comunicating via ant+ or bluetooth) in practice garmin has locked some software features making the connection not straightforward.

I have now been able to start having the powerdata on my forerunner245 by using an connect IQ app named datafields4. This allows the power data to both be seen on my watch and on the garmin connect activity. Yet it is not taken for, for example, computing average power over 20 minutes or maximum power.... relevant metrics to support your training that are provided by garmin.

How can this be fixed? I find it unacceptable that garmin does not provide this sort of compatibility across their hardware...

  • Hello Jose, we offer many different watches so that there is an option for as many people as possible. Just to put it out there, we do have a compatible device list for all of our devices. If you go to https://buy.garmin.com/en-US/US/p/606555/pn/010-01787-01#devices then click on compatbile devices you will see all of the devices the Vectors are compatible with, and if you go to https://buy.garmin.com/en-US/US/p/646690/pn/010-02120-21#devices you'll see the all of the devices the 245 are compatible with.

The Forerunner 245 is designed to be a mid level running watch, with high end running features and entry level detailed cross training metrics. It's just not designed to function with a power meter.

Vector support is available on all of our Edge Cycling computers, as well as our multi sport watches (the Forerunner 745, and the 945) as well as our Outdoor Models (Fenix 6 series).

  • Note though that my complain is that Garmin connect (a platform that is quite independent from the Garmin device) does essentially nothing with my power data.

Basically I find it surprising that you sell a powermeter, for a price bigger than direct competitors, that is useless on its own! One basic feature of the vector should be that you can record the powermeter directly on the Garmin connect mobile phone app.

Also, not having any access to cycle dynamics just because you don't have the two pedal setup  is another ripoff from my point of view that is only described in small letter...

Sadly I only noticed this incompatibilities after purchasing the powermeter, I am indeed considering sending it back as the power values seem to have far too many spikes.

  • I've been a long time Garmin user and have owned 2 x Fenix's and various Forerunners... now I'm getting to the age where cycling has become more and more attractive I have been researching the power meter pedals.. it is very strange to me that a Forerunner 245 cannot communicate with a foot pedal and moreover (as Jose points out) that the power pedals cannot work without the need of another Garmin product. Very poor design and I don't think I will purchase because of this.. which is a shame because even though I've had many gripes and grumbles over the years, I had also been quite a loyal garmin customer... obvioulsy not Garmin-Brooks fault or problem (and I appreciate they are trying to resolve Jose's issue here) but still a problem!

  • It is by design and not likely to change. Good you found a workaround, but if it is not quite good enough, you better find a better workaround or get a device which has support for cycling power.

That said, I know nothing about cycling power and if those metrics are available with higher supported devices. Maybe you can solve it by exporting to another platform, which can compute those metrics.

  • 100% agree. This is complete b.s. that forerunner 245 doesn't work with power. It is capable but garmin is blocking it. So basically if I cycle indoor all winter I have no Vo2 max updates.

I'm about to just ditch garmin all together over this. I'm not buying a brand new watch off garmin when my 245 is capable of getting the date off my smart trainer. Wahoo is getting a new customer I guess.
