Activity tracking without wearing watch 245

I'm lookimg to track my activity, while performing an outdoor teamsport on a pitch, where it isn't allowed to wear a watch.

I would love to see my GPS and step count, but mostly I want to see my HR. Can I track my activity with a HR chest strap? I.e. start the activity on the watch, leave the watch on the bench, and stop it after the game; but a cheststrap tracks the activity while I play (HR, GPS and steps).

Probably not, but would be amazing.

  • have a look at the wahoo tickr x ?

  • The new Polar Sense HR sensor has a range of 150m

  • There's the super expensive Garmin HRM-Pro strap. It has two features, that would be interesting from your point of view. The first one is that the strap can collect HR data offline (when disconnected from the watch), and then after the actvity is finished, upload that data to the watch to merge it into the activity file. Thing is, AFAIK the 245 does not support that feature. You would need a more advanced garmin watch to do that. So here comes the other interesing feature of the HRM-Pro. It can act as a standalone 24/7 activity tracker. It will collect HR data, steps and calories, even if you don't have any watch, and can upload this data to Garmin Connect directly. It WILL NOT create a separate activity and the HR data will be available on the 24/7 graph only, and WILL NOT be merged into any activity that is running on your 245.

  • These 2 sound like a good optionSlight smile. The Polar HR with 150m, does it work to start an activity and not use the watch? Sure it doesn't count steps but does it register the activity (and i.e. training effect)

About the Garmin HRM-Pro, i don't quite get your last remarks. Same questions really, if I start an activity on the watch, leave it on the bench, and use the HRM-Pro.. Do I end up with an activity including HR, training effect and steps? It seems like you are saying it doesn't?

No. You will get steps, and you will get HR, but it WILL NOT be embedded into the activity that is running on the watch. It will be visible only on the 24/7 timeline. I mean, in your case it will work just like a separate simple daily tracker.

    So to sum it up:

    1. Your activity running on the watch WILL NOT have heart rate data, and so you WILL NOT get training effect nor any other heart rate related metric.

    2. In Garmin Connect you will see your steps counted.

    3. You will see your heart rate on the 24/7 timeline, but not in the activity view.

    4. If you want to end up with an activity that includes heart rate, then you will need to use a more advanced garmin watch with the HRM-Pro.

I'm not sure if I cleared anything up. It is a bit complicated for someone who doesn't have extensive experience with the garmin ecosystem. You might want to try reading this review:
