Currently just walking on the treadmill and getting HR in the 170s-180s. I bought this watch for fitness tracking specifically so I’m a little disappointed. Any suggestions?

I'm assuming you're referring to the WHR sensor? Some work well, some don't. It's an individual thing with too many factors for someone to determine how to get it to work best for you. The limitations of optical WHR monitors is well documented and in my personal opinion should only be used to track HR outside of any activities. Garmin, along every other manufacture, suggest using a chest strap for better accuracy.
You can try what suunto suggests:

Once I started doing what they are saying it is pretty consistent at least for me and my FR245.
