Weather widget update frequency

  • Is there a way to control the frequency with which the weather widget updates?

My widget only seems to update every several hours, per the "as of" time at the bottom of the screen, which makes it effectively useless. I've poked around in the watch and Garmin Connect settings, but haven't noticed a way to control the refresh frequency.

Note that my widget does update, just infrequently. I've read other forum posts where people report that it's not updating at all; this is different. I just want it to update more frequently.

    It tries once an hour, but when it tries, the watch might not be connected to the phone, so you may miss an hour or two.  And some may depend on when the weather station reports to the weather service used by Garmin.  For me,the weather is consistently from 51 minutes after the hour.

    Something must be wrong with my setup. My watch and phone are connected and within range of each other almost every moment of every day, yet the weather widget is consistently stale. I haven't kept a detailed log, but I usually find that it's several (like, three) hours behind.

    At this point, I'm only keeping the weather widget around as a curiosity, to see if it improves at some point. Even if it did reliably update every hour, that's not terribly frequent. If anyone from Garmin is following this, it would be helpful for the widget to:

    • Retry if it fails to update at the scheduled time
    • Allow the user to force an update - or, better yet, update automatically whenever the user scrolls to it and sits for a few seconds, like the SpO2 widget does
    • Allow the user to customize the refresh frequency, including to shorter intervals (e.g. every 15 minutes)

    Some more observations:

    1. My weather widget updates at 51 minutes after the hour, as well
    2. The "as of" timestamp at the bottom of the widget indicates that it updates every three hours
    3. The most recent update is not available to me promptly

    I'll illustrate #2 and #3 with an example. I went to bed at 01:15 last night, wearing my watch, and with my phone (i.e. Garmin Connect) on my night stand. I woke at 08:30 and checked the weather widget, which reported that it was current as of 04:41.

    Later that morning, I checked the widget again, and it reported that it was updated as of 07:15. Now, it's 13:32, and my widget is telling me that it updated at 10:51.

    This three-hour pattern (04:51 > 07:51 > 10:51) is consistent with what I've observed since purchasing the watch a few weeks ago. Additionally, when I checked at 08:30, it should have at least shown me the 07:51 update, instead of the 04:51 update.
