Backlight gesture doesn't work on underside of wrist

I just purchased a Forerunner 245 Music, and find that that screen is nearly impossible to read indoors without the backlight on. I can press the Light button, which works reliably but, of course, that requires using my other hand.

From reading the manual, the Gesture feature is what I'd like to use. Unfortunately, it doesn't work when wearing the watch on the underside of my wrist.

I assume the left/right Wrist setting in the User Profile is intended to help the watch differentiate between the gesture of raising/turning one's arm in order to look at the watch face from other arm gestures. In fact, the Gesture feature does work pretty well when wearing the watch on the back on my wrist, just not on the underside - presumably because the accelerometer is reporting the opposite motion of what the Gesture feature is expecting.

I've tried both Wrist settings (e.g. left/right), to no avail. The Gesture feature only works when I have the watch on the back of my wrist, and the Wrist setting configured properly. My question is:

  • Is there a way to configure the backlight Gesture feature to work when wearing the watch on the underside of my wrist? If not, is there a way to log a feature enhancement request with Garmin?

For context, I find it difficult to rotate my arm enough to see the watch face when wearing it the intended way, on the back of my wrist. I can do it when wearing the watch below my wrist bone, but the manual specifically says to wear it above the wrist bone. Wearing the face on the underside of my wrist makes it easier to rotate the watch face toward my actual face for viewing. Things like the heart rate monitor and pulse Ox seem to work fine in this orientation; it's just the backlight that I've observed as an issue so far.

TIA for any suggestions.

  • I don’t wear mine on the underside but mines not working either... I read to try making sure do not disturb is disabled and that the gesture feature mat also be disabled during default sleep hours. I got mine to work for maybe 10 minutes last night and now it has stopped working again.

  • Thank you mate, I’ve noticed that i am enabling my don’t disturb option and that’s why the gesture won’t work, but after seeing your comment I figured it out, i know it has been over two years but it still beneficial, thanks
