Do cycling workouts contribute to training status and VO2max?

I have been using my 245 quite intensively for running and now I am also using it for cycling and other activities.

When I am mostly cycling and not running, the Training Load goes up, but the Training Status goes down to *none*.

Is it only running that contributes to theTraining Status and vo2max? Garmin Connect seems to suggest that both activities should do.

  • Unfortunately, Garmin requires that you run to maintain a training status. If you haven't run in a while, you'll have to do 2 outdoor runs with GPS within a week to start it back up.  VO2Max while cycling is only possible if connected to a power meter. I don't own a 245, so I don't know if cycling power meters are compatible with this watch or not.

  • I see. That's a shame. I find it somehow disappointing that V02 max of cycling needs a power meter. It would be great to get an estimate by using other sensors instead, such as a combo of FC and speed, but maybe that's me being naive.

  • You really need a power meter because just moving on a bike depends a lot on the bike, not just your speed and elevation change while riding. I have two different bikes that are so totally different that without a power meter nothing could tell what I’ve done.
