FR245 suddenly shows updated Vo2 after cycling!

Hi all,

Just noticed a strange thing and I was wondering if this is the result of a firmware update.

I have an FR245 which I use for running and cycling. Now, I had some health problems lately and stopped running over a month and a half ago. But I resumed cycling lately, and while I have no running workouts the 245 keeps updating (increasing) my Vo2 max. In fact in two cases it even showed the Vo2 on the summary screen after my cycling session, just as it normally does for running.

Everything I've read implies 245 only estimates and shows Vo2 on running activities. So what is this?FR

  • This shouldn't be possible since cycling VO2 max is only available when using a power meter but the 245 doesn't support power meters... Probably a bug.

I know, and yet it does update the Vo2. There is no cycling Vo2 in 245, so it just updates the regular Vo2. Maybe they changed something in the firmware?

  • That would really surprise me, we haven't received a new firmware update in 3+ months

Do you have a Garmin Edge (GPS) or do you have power meters in the first place?

No, the 245 is my only garmin device. I am using external HR when cycling usually, and I have speed and cadence sensors.

  • I remembered something like that with my 935. It looked like Vo2max updated but i never run. Now i have a 245 and i also bike. But twice a week i walk for 15 mn and that does update my vo2max using the walk activity. You do not have to run. walking does the trick too

  • Are you sure? My 245 Music doesn't do that when I've done a walking activity. Do you literally see a VO2 max number on the summary screen (next to the recovery time) you see after you saved your activity just like it shows your VO2 max on the summary screen after a run? Do you use a heart rate strap (chest strap)?

EDIT: I just found this on Garmin's website: "In order to generate a Running VO2 Max estimate, you must record a Run or Walking activity with heart rate for a minimum of 10 minutes above 70% of your max heart rate."

It probably doesn't work for me when walking because my heart rate will never be 70% of my max heart rate while walking.

I do walk, about 10000 steps a day most days, but I rarely use the "walking activity", I just let the watch record the steps. I haven't recorded a walking activity since March. Vo2 was updated silently twice but last time I got it on the summary screen after cycling too.

Just happened again,  it now shows 50, increased silently one point once again.

  • The key here is that it's over a month since the last time you obtained a VO2max from running. This means the watch will start estimating VO2max from your daily activity levels. (not directly from a specific recorded activity).

Thanks. So I guess it could be estimating it from my walking, even without activity recording. However it usually updates it after cycling, sometimes silently, sometimes also shown on the activity summary screen. This behavior I think cannot be explained.
