Rucking activity

There should be a ruck activity added. It's not only synonymous with the military, it's gaining popularity in the civilian world. There should be a data field for weight of the ruck in lbs, that should be factored in the calorie counter.

  • There should be a data field for weight of the ruck in lbs, that should be factored in the calorie counter.

Calories burned are based on HR not weight one may be carrying.  There is no set calorie rate for carrying 40 lbs, 50 lbs, etc.  If you were to take two 25 year old males, both 5'10", one at 160 lbs and the other at 200 lbs, they'll have two different BMR's.  So if the 160 lb guy was rucking with 50 lbs and the 200 lb guy with 10 lbs they would burn calories differently even though they would both step on the scales at 210 lbs.  The same goes for yourself.  Depending on temperature, slope, speed, etc. your HR will be different each time, burning more or less calories than the previous ruck even if you carried 50 lbs each time.

  • I 100% feel this! The rucking community is massive and it sucks to not be able to correctly log ruck workouts. To Tess's point, fine. Even if the weight wouldn't actively be used to calculate anything,  it would still be nice to track it. If I'm rucking,  I'd like to be able to look back and see that I didn't just do 5 miles, I did it under a 50# pack. If hiking and snowshoeing are available activities,  why not rucking?

I absolutely agree.  There are a few apps I wish Garmin would allow us to edit so we have a historic record. My comment was based on logging weight to factor in the caloric burn.  It's not the weight that determines calories burned, but the effort put forth.  As someone who rucks, I'm sure you're aware that you could burn more calories carrying 40 lbs than 50 lbs going the same distance simply by changing pace or terrain.

Nothing stops you from writing this into the notes field of the activity

  • Garmin please add rucking to your activities. Also, it would be nice to have some rucking training plans. I had knee replacement in 2017, and before that I used your running training plans. I currently use the mountain biking training plans. The training plans help keep you motivated. A rucking training plan with how much weight your packing would be awesome..

  • I would also love to see this activity added. I think the key feature of this would be the calorie calculation based on body weight + pack load.

  • Can’t you just duplicate the trail-running activity, call it Rucking, disable vo2max registration in this activity (so it doesn't mess that up) and add a comment about how much you were carrying in garmin connect.

  • Rucking is definitely becoming popular and is likely to gain traction with influential exercise gurus like Dr. Peter Attia and others recommending it.   Three problems with not being able to track ruck weight:
    (1)  HR chest strap not reliable with a weight vest covering it --- and wrist HR highly inaccurate.
    (2) Using Hiking or Walking as a substitute renders those same activities hard to track/evaluate progress when doing those activities without weights or rucking different weights.
    (3) Manually changing body weight before/after each ruck is cumbersome and messes up other data.

Adding "Rucking" as an activity with a single user defined 'ruck weight' field should be relatively straightforward.

Is the Garmin team considering this?

    Thanks!

  • Yes, please add a ruck activity type!
