Overreaching Training Status Help

Hi all,

Before I start, please excuse my stupidity - I am writing on behalf of my Dad and though I own a Garmin Vivomove, I'm not familiar with the running/tech jargon.

My dad is 60 and has been running for a couple of years - not marathon level, just 5-10 miles a few times a week. We bought him a forerunner 245 last September and he's been getting on with it great.

At the start of the year he highlighted to me that he was getting a message to say he was overreaching. We all suspected that it meant he was overdoing it but I don't believe anything in his training had changed.

He had an operation at the end of January and therefore has not been doing much since. He has started slowly getting back into it and has run twice with a total of 7 miles in 5 weeks. He is still getting the 'overreaching' status and has asked if I can try and help him with it (being his youngest daughter)!

Following his recent attempts at running, his fitness age level has gone from 44 to 64 (he's slightly offended by this).

Is there anything that we can do with the settings to increase his level to prevent these messages appearing or is there something he needs to do physically?

Any help/advice would be appreciated! Thanks!

  • "Overreaching" can have two reasons:

    1. Either your dad really pushes himself too hard or ...

    2. ... or heart rate zones are set incorrectly on the watch and/or Garmin Connect.
