My watch does everything I would ever want besides reading my power meter. I feel like a software update could fix this. Or do I need to upgrade my watch to get that feature?

Since the Forerunner 245 is primarily a running watch, it doesn't talk to power meters. I would not expect any firmware update to add power meter support. If you need that, you'll have to get a different watch (945, for instance)
I figured as much. If you think about it the 245 has Bluetooth and my power meter is Bluetooth. Garmin is just not allowing a connection. There is internal storage available also.
For me it has worked well with Vivoactive 3 and Stryd (running power) as well as PowerTap (bike power).
You don't need to pair your power meter, the data field will search for available power meters before starting an activity.
I have never tried Bluetooth power meters though as all my power meters are ANT+.
