Question about the importance of barometer

Hey,

I'm thinking about buying a new Garmin watch. I'm mainly running (roads), but have started with some trails as well. I'm also mountain biking a bit.

I have looked at the 245 music and the 645 music, and I think I know all the differences. However, I have a wondering about the barometric data.

An example:

If I'm running up a hill, lets say the distance is 1 km. The difference in altitude is 100 m. Will both the 245 and the 645 show the distance 1 km after the running? And will the difference only be in the elevation data? The 645 will be closer to 100 m compared to the 245?

I guess I'm more interested in the distance, compared to elevation data.

A picture to explain more. Will the 245 and 645 measure 1000 m? Of course the GPS isn't correct, but in a perfect world?

  • They should both measure 1000m.   It's an interesting scenario, though.

  • They would both measure the same distance. The only difference is the 245 will use elevation from geographical surveys and the 645's elevation will come from the barometer reading. Provided the 645 is calibrated correctly, the elevation gain and loss measurements are more precise using a barometer. If exact distance is very important, consider a foot pod as it will measure distance much better than GPS.
