Strava Map vs. Garmin Connect Map - 245 Running Question

Has anybody figured out what is better with this Strava App that gets downloaded to the 245M?? It seems you need to be connected to either Garmin Connect or Strava? Right?

This is what I am doing to get a map to 245 (LOTS of Steps).

I export the map from Strava.  Import into Garmin Connect. Create a Route/Favorite. Then send it the watch.  Then I run that map on the watch (which is a lot of steps).

I didn't see the value of this Strava App? Is it require connection? Is the route map better?

thanks for feedback.

  • The Strava Routes app automatically syncs starred and self-created routes in Strava, so it's a lot less steps. Just create or star a route in Strava or star , and it should show up in the Strava Routes app in your watch.

However, I don't think those routes will have turn-by-directions on your 245. If I'm not mistaken, the only way to get TbT that would be to import the route into Garmin Connect and send it to the watch from GC, as you're already doing. This is because for Garmins which don't have maps, they rely on TbT directions that are added before the route is sent to the device, and Strava doesn't do that.

  • Ok but from what I can tell the 245M Strava App requires a connection either to Strava or Garmin.  Not sure for the entire

run, but I am using this for Trails usually NO cell service.

  • You just need a connection to load a route onto your Garmin. After the route is loaded, it launches your run activity with the route and you don’t need a connection anymore.

It’s just a way to load routes on to your device “directly” from Strava.

What it will do is download the route to the watch so it's stored in the memory, but you don't need to have the watch connected to the phone all the time. Just sync it once.
