Heart rate monitoring occassionaly stops working

Hi,

the optical 24hr heart rate monitoring on my new Forerunner 245 occassionaly stops working. It looks like it is „thinking“ that I do not wear it anymore. Even though I am still wearing it the HR widget shows three dashes —- as my pulse. I can turn it back on by moving it away from my wrist, waiting until the green leds switch back on and then I again get a correct HR measurement for some time until it stops again. Occurs every few hours. I did not realize this problem with the initial firmware 2.0 (now I am on 2.6). Already tried a reset but it didn‘t help.

Anyone else had this issue ?

Regards Thomas

  • Rui, prior to doing a full reset you could try doing a soft reset of holding the top left button down for 15-20 seconds. You could also go to menu, settings, sensors and accessories, wrist heart rate, hit your top right button to change the status to off, then hit the top right button again to turn it off. If after that it's not working then I would confirm the back lights are blinking and that they shut off to make sure the hardware is operating properly. If that looks like it's operable, (again lights blink and they turn on like they are supposed to. If that is the case then I would look into doing a reset by going to menu then settings, system, then restore defaults.

  • I have had the same issue but recently got rid of the problem.
I started cleaning the watch with water + soap after each exercise and now it's been working fine for the past month.
Previously it stopped measuring heart rate randomly and often didn't start at all.

Not sure if this is the reason for getting it working but it's worth giving it a try.

  • Okay! I’ve been struggling with this same problem for the past week and discovered the problem for me. Apparently the sensor on my FR245 doesn’t read through the tattoo I have on my left wrist but works fine where I don’t have tattoos. Curious if this could be the problem for others as well.

  • I also had these issues and I assume it might also be because of my tattoed forearm. But my Fenix 6s reads HR without an issue.

  • My FR235 also lost this function. The sensor doesn't work.I'm sure of that cause I've managed to launch the preinstalled diagnostic tool.

You just have to turn off the watch and hold the down button when you use the power button to switch it on again. If you hold it long enough you'll diagnostic tool will be launched. To exit it you just simply hold down the down button again.

  • This might be a super late reply.

I noticed that when I include HRM tracking on my watch face (whichever one you choose) it appears that that HRM keeps tracking as it normally should (somehow this keeps the watch actively tracking your pulse).

My 245 Music was having the same issues of the HRM working for a while and then just stopped.  I could see the sensor comes on briefly when restarting the watch or when plugging in the charging cable. So it could be that it's a software issue. Was playing around with the watch faces and found the possible solution above.

    Hope this helps.

  • This happens to me, after some firmware update long ago. But in my case, it more or less always appears after charging to 100%, but after immediately restarting the watch, always fixed the problem. I am pretty sure, it is not only related to this device, because of friend of mine has a Venu with exact the same behavior. After charging to 100% the Heart rate does not monitor and a restart resolves the problem.

    Best regards,

     Michael
