update: no more step tracking, sleep and inconsistent heart rate

Since the last update, the watch has become unusable: no longer sleep tracking, steps are no longer counted and the heart rate is completely inconsistent
  • Hi, I´ve already contacted garmin support, they asked me to factpry reset my device, but the issues still percist; please help.

  • Any empty file called force.tmp should work. Both files need to be in the Garmin folder. The FR165M firmware won't work on the normal 165.

  • Since January 18th (following a software update), I have been experiencing these issues as well.

When I contacted Garmin Support, they asked me to install "Garmin Express" on a laptop for data backup and to perform a hard reset on my device. I couldn't install the software, but I did perform a factory reset and removed the device from my phone's Bluetooth settings. I also uninstalled and reinstalled the "Connect" and "IQ" apps, but the problems persist.

Below are the issues I have noticed on my device:

    Daily Use:

    • Rapid battery drain: The battery only lasts 2 days.

    • Inconsistent HR readings: It stays between 72 and 80 BPM regardless of activity.

    • Tracking failures: It does not track sleep or HRV, which affects the recovery indicator (showing "prolonged" recovery due to lack of sleep data).

    During Activity (Running, HIIT):

    • Heart Rate issues: It does not track heart rate correctly (stays in the 72–76 range). I used an older device (Forerunner 245) simultaneously, and it displayed my heart rate correctly.

    • Input Lag: There is a 10-to-20-second delay when starting or stopping an activity after pressing the button.

    • Faulty Cadence: Cadence readings are very low, even when increasing speed.

    • Inconsistent Running Pace: The pace increases intermittently; it initially displays a low pace, then "jumps" or accelerates to catch up once the GPS updates the distance covered.

I request your support with these issues, as they are significant and have persisted for a considerable time.

  • Tengo problemas con el Forerunner 965 en los datos de la frecuencia cardiaca. Han habido días que ha marcado fatal.

  • Look on page 9. There is a link to an older firmware for the non music version and a link to the music firmware with instructions on how to downgrade. If you're not technically inclined then rather wait till Garmin brings out an update to fix the issues.

  • I'm seeing the same thing! And the issue has been consistent too - heart rate stays at 74-76bpm even if I push myself (or even if I know I'm staying at zone 2 but I know this is obviously not). Garmin fix this please!

  • I've been in contact with Garmin Support and they acknowledged the issues , they have a ticket raised and noted that its been worked on but no timeline to resolve unfortunately.

I don't have anything other that above from them.

  • Seeing as Garmin obviously doesn't give 2 shits about their customer base, which other watch brand/model would be a 165 or even a 570 competitor? Going to look elsewhere as this service is unacceptable

  • My sleep tracking steps have stopped working since the update of a few days ago severed my connection to Connect. It hasn’t worked correctly since I reconnected it. Running a medical study with a university medical school using his Epix Pro Gen 2, and now I’m missing vital sleep data after 1.4 years of this study. Please advise

  • We are rolling out SW v27.10 for the Forerunner 165 series, which addresses the data dropout issues described in this thread. You can manually download this software update by selecting Menu > System > Software Update > Check For Updates.

If you're still experiencing this issue after updating to 27.10, please create a new thread. Thank you for your ongoing patience as we worked towards resolving this!
