Metronome app and run settings (165)

I've downloaded two metronome apps for my 165, but neither of them are accessible in Run Settings...it's either start a run, or have the metronome on but then I can't access the activities without closing the app. Is there a way to add the metronome to the Run Settings of the FR165?

  • Not sure. Maybe contact the app developer and ask them how the app is meant to be used?

I don't think so. The only kind of Connect IQ app that works within a built-in activity profile (like Run) is a data field. CIQ data fields cannot update / do things faster than once per second.

This means that if a dev tried to make a metronome as a Connect IQ data field, it would be able to beep or vibrate no faster than once per second, which would obviously be useless for running.

The other option would be to implement a Connect IQ device app, which is like a complete replacement for a built-in activity. This type of app can do things faster than once per second. A dev could conceivably make a Connect IQ device app that implements a metronome and records a run activity, but then they'd have to reinvent the wheel for basic running features, and most users wouldn't want to use it anyway (since the user experience and feature set would be worse than the built in Run activity).

Unfortunately if you want a software metronome that works in a built-in activity, the only real option is to buy a Garmin watch with that feature.

There is a workaround if you own an FR165 Music: generate an audio file (MP3) with the beeps that you want, and play it on repeat through your earbuds while you run. I actually tried this once myself for a race, even though I have a watch with a metronome.

The reason I did this is because the built-in metronome on my FR955 only works with the watch beeper (tones) or vibrations, and:

    - the metronome vibrations are a little too strong and annoying

    - the watch beeper would be annoying to everyone else (and besides, I usually run with tones disabled, because the alert tones are annoying to me and everyone else)

I thought it was a lot nicer to hear the metronome through my bluetooth earbuds, although in the end it didn't help me with my race at all.

It's too bad the built-in metronome (on watches with a beeper) doesn't have an option to work with earbuds. Idk how it works with the newer watches which have a fully-fledged speaker instead of a beeper.
