Forerunner 165 showing low heart rate during mid-high intensity bike ride

I just picked up a forerunner 165 and during a fairly intense stationary bike ride it would show a heart rate of 80-100. A few times it climbed to 115~ but then it would settle back down to the sub 100 range. My cardio is decent, but I know for a fact my heart rate is considerably higher than what is being shown. I made sure my watch is snug, above my wrist, and I reset it because I read it may help but still no “real” reading.

Is this something an update could fix that I may not have downloaded yet? I’m not expecting this to be 100% accurate but if it’s going to show my heart rate barely elevated above a walking pace while I’m sweating on an hour long cardio set I’m not sure I see the purpose and may end up returning it.

  • Having the same issue and no replies to my post.  It's fine when using a HRM but when using watch sensor it's useless, about 20/30bpm lower than what it should be

  • I’ve been having the same issue. When resting it’s fine, but when I’m running it peaks at around 140 which I know is not right. On the last run I stopped to record my pulse three times and it was consistently 40 beats in 15 seconds, indicating 160bpm.

Looking back on my Forerunner 45 activities, that watch was correctly reflecting my actual HR.

I have a case open with Garmin support, they’ve asked me to do lots of tests, try lots of thigs and asked me so many questions. I’ve done everything they asked and even shared with them my Forerunner 45 and 165 activities on Garmin Connect, so they have all the proof. It’s definitely the watch.

In the last e-mail, as well as asking me to repeat all the same tests again, and asking the same questions, they’ve asked me to ask a friend to try it! Absolutely ridiculous customer support. I’m going to back to the retailer to get a replacement
