Tap to wake screen stops working after sleep.

There's a section in the user manual under "About the Amoled Display" that says: "You can turn your wrist toward your body, tap the touchscreen, or press a button to wake the watch"

On my VA5 tapping the screen wakes it up, but on my 165 tapping or swiping the screen doesn't and I have to turn my wrist or press a button.

  • I think there is a bug. Tap to wake doesn't work in the morning after exiting sleep. I have touch set to off during sleep. If I turn my wrist or press a button the screen wakes and then touch works, but tap to wake doesn't.

If I disable and enable touch then tap to wake starts working again. So it would seem that the way it's re-enabled automatically after sleep is missing something.

  • Thank you for sharing. May I have permission to reach you via email so we can further investigate?

  • yes, that's fine. Although the issue seems to be a bit random. It doesn't always happen after sleep.

  • I’ve experienced the same. After another night’s sleep it starts working again. And then it stops working again after a few days. Restarting the watch also resolves the issue.

  • I've been testing and on mornings where the morning report is turned off tap / swipe to wake works as expected. On days where the morning report is enabled touch works, but only after a gesture / button press to turn the screen on. If the screen is off then tapping or swiping doesn't work and the screen stays off. I need to manually toggle touch off and on for it to start working again. A restart would probably work too.

It would seem like something in the morning report, or how / when it's being displayed causes this to happen. I'm not sure if viewing the morning report before or after the sleep schedule wake time makes a difference. I recall viewing the report after the end of my sleep schedule, but it's possible that it could also happen when viewing the report before the sleep schedule wake time.

  • Just a bit more feedback. I tested and when waking up before the end of my sleep schedule, then going through the morning report and selecting to exit the report the issue doesn't happen.

When waking up after the sleep schedule end time and going through the morning report the issue happened again. Not sure if it has to do with the timing of things or the extra step (different way of exiting the report).

  • I've noticed that exiting the morning report by using the bottom left button, which brings up the question 'exit morning report' doesn't seem to trigger the issue. This was when waking up after the sleep schedule end. So maybe it's not time based, but how the report is exited. Or a combination. Might be a tricky one to debug :) The issue also seemed to happen after charging the watch.

I've also seen a post on Reddit where someone else mentions having the same issue, but this forum doesn't let me post the link.

  • Strangely, I've had it function correctly for a few days with the morning report on and exiting as normal after the end of sleep. Then this morning with the report turned off the issue happened again. So now I'm not sure what would be causing it.

  • The other day it happened to me after a nap, so that rules out the morning report. But definitely something to do with the touch screen not turning on after it was disabled.

The quickest workaround I've found to resolve the issue is to toggle sleep mode on and off from the shortcuts screen.

  • It's happened to me the past few days with the morning report switched off, so yes, seems like it's something with sleep / naps and probably the setting to disable touch during sleep.

I have a shortcut in the controls menu to switch touch off and on again to restore functionality.
