Does the new firmware work with the old Utility app?

Hi,

Before I update my NEO 2T to enable virtual shifting, I want to make 100% sure it will still work in Isokinetic and Isotonic modes using the old Tacx Utility app on my phone. For some reason they just abandoned those modes in the Tacx Training app.

So if anyone who has upgraded can test the Tacx Utility app and see if it still works, I'd be happy.

It should be easy to find the Android apk file on Google. If not I can post a link.

Cheers

  • Hello, thanks for your post.

The Tacx Utility App was discontinued and will receive no updates: Tacx Training App Replaces the Tacx Utility App
It is possible that the NEO 2T will not pair to the discontinued Utility App after updating.

The Tacx Training App has two very useful unstructured riding modes: Unstructured Riding With Tacx Trainers
Slope and Power workouts allow you to set a specific grade % or wattage target, respectively, where the trainer matches the set resistance.

  • Hi, and thanks for answering. I am fully aware that the Utility app is discontinued. I even had to roll back the Utility app since the last update effectively. disabled it in an effort to force everybody to use only the Training app. This is exactly why I asked is someone who has updated could confirm wheter it still can be used to activate the Isotonic and Isokinetic modes.

I am also fully aware how sim and erg modes work, and they do not do what the two above mentioned modes do.

I find that being able to set a locked speed/cadence and controlling the power purely by effort is especially useful for knee rehab, and one of the reasons I, as a Personal Trainer, chose the Tacx Neo over the competition.

    Cheers

  • You might test out a 0% or slightly downhill -1% slope workout, this would result in the trainer's flywheel behaving either neutral or driven forward lightly, and would allow you to freely choose your own speed/cadence/power output

  • better to ask it on the FB in /groups/TacxNeoOwners group, there are more active 2T users than here (i have only Neo OG so i cant help )

  • ah i found You there, You asked it yesterday :) (but no answer, summertime maybe) i am trying to ask my friends who has 2T

  • Yeah, that has nothing to do with Isokinetic mode. I am well aware of what I can do in Sim and ERG modes, having had Tacx trainers since the Fortius was top of the line many years ago.

With all respect, it sound like you don't know what Isokinetic mode actually does. It lets you set the speed, and with that the cadence by selecting an appropriate gear, And then you can ease off and push 50W or stand up and push 600W, and the cadence will stay the same without having to change gears. For intervals it works kinda like an ERG mode where you don't have to set up the workout and set the exact amount of watts beforehand, you can rather push what you are capable of and stay at the set cadence. And if you feel any discomfort (in a bad knee, for example), you can simply ease off and stay at the same cadence. In ERG mode, if you ease off you will simply stop.

It's almost like some kind of virtual gearing where the shifting is 100% automatic and 100% stepless.

Anyway, it is mind blowing that Tacx/Garmin won't use this advantage over the competition and offer these modes in the Training app. Unless there is some kind of legal issue of course.

Don't get me wrong, Sim and ERG modes are great and will be enough for most people, it's just that the Tacx Neo trainers have something more that no one else has, and it's strange not to take advantage of it.

  • Thanks for your feedback. With all respect, Garmin discontinued the Tacx Utility App and I can not speak to whether the latest updates will change functionality with discontinued software. If you have the Tacx Utility App installed it will remain functional and NEO updates do not install automatically.

Tacx trainers will continue to receive updates through the Tacx Training suite, and our compatibility with 3rd party training platforms remains open.
