Can’t Bluetooth with TACX Training

Hi

I originally started using my NEO 2T with the RGT training platform with AppleTV and my Television. Things paired up easily and still work fine today even after Wahoo merged with RGT.

I’ve decided to switch from Wahoo/RGT and start using the TACX Training app on my Iphone13 except now I can’t get bluetooth to pair.  I’ve gone around the house shutting OFF everything that might use Bluetooth. Then when I plug in the trainer, no BT signal ever pops up on my iphone13. I try all combos of shutting off BT the trainer and restarting the app without success.

Anyway, after plugging the trainer in, the power light is lit and the Ant & BT lights remain off. However if I go back and plug in my AppleTV/Television, then start RGT app, the trainer BT connects just fine under Wahoo/RGT.  That is, the trainer lights are now Blue for BT, center light is off and the end power light is Red. And what is even more interesting is the AppleTV device displays no name for the BT device that is connected.

Any ideas how I can get TACX Training connected ?

  • then start RGT app, the trainer BT connects just fine under Wahoo/RGT

Try to disconnect the trainer in this application.

  • I was able to go back into RGT and disconnect the trainer from the software like you said. I could actually make the blue light indicator on the trainer turn on and off this way. So I left it “off” in the software, saved, then closed the app and then unplugged the AppleTV and television so those components would not interfere. I did the same software disconnect for the RGT app on iPhone too. Then I rebooted the phone.

From there I started the Tacx Training app on the phone, plugged in the trainer, waited 5 min for Bluetooth to come in the control panel… but nothing. Then I tried the training app button in settings>Connect to Trainer. Still the same. This app or my phone still does not recognize there is a signal out there. There are no other electronic devices that might use Bluetooth anywhere

I wonder since the trainer has not had a firmware update since I bought it 2yrs ago, trying to work with an updated training app might be an issue.

    Any other ideas?

  • If after trying to connect with the Tacx Training App you go back to the the RGT App on your iPhone (without restarting either device) does the RGT App connect immediately?

There is an app in the Apple App Store called nRF Connect for Mobile that allows you to see what Bluetooth Low Energy (aka Bluetooth LE, BLE) devices, of which the Tacx NEO 2T is one, your iPhone can see.

This is the web link for it: https://apps.apple.com/gb/app/nrf-connect-for-mobile/id1054362403

I've only used the Android version of nRF Connect which from the images in the link above appears to have a different interface from the Android version so cannot give you any guidance on how to use the it on iOS.

  • I’m not sure this is progress so check this out…

I plugged in the trainer and on the IPhone:

    1. Checked if any BT signal came up in Settings -> nope…
    2. Started Tacx app, tried “Connect trainer” and then Device Mgr- both tell me to I need to enable BT.
    3. Started RGT app. From here I tap the “Bluetooth LE” button and the entry line TACX NEO 2T 31192 text appears in red along with 3 corresponding new buttons called Power, Cadence & Control.  When I tap any of these 3 buttons, the TACX NEO 2T 31192 text turns green. This is when the TACX NEO 2T 31192 text turns green. At the same time the BT device shows in the iPhone settings screen.  This is the first time Ive seen it pop up.  At the same time the blue BT light shows up on the trainer.
    4. While the BT signal is showing in the phones Settings screen, I start the TACX App. But it is the same thing. The Device Mgr and Connect Trainer areas tell me to turn BT on. (Remember it is connected to RGT).

I’ll download the nRF utility, play around with it, and report back.

  • This nRF tool is somewhat interesting.

It detects many different BT signals and their RF strength.

It detects the Neo 2T signal and it ranges from 12-30db stronger than its next competitors. I even detected the AppleTV upstairs just to eliminate one more signal and learned that one of the other signals were coming from my Tesla in the garage(infotainment BT signal). Some other signals are labeled as peoples TVs from the neighbors and every once in awhile a huge pulse comes through.

I can see the value in the nRF utility to detect  and eliminate a few of those competing signals.

Now I am still stuck with this TACX interface app as it still claims it can’t find my trainers BT signal.

I have a feeling my trainers firmware is out of sync with the training app except the only way to update the firmware is by connecting through their training app to the trainer. So it’s the dog chasing it’s tail here.

  • The current firmware for the Tacx NEO 2T is 0.0.38 released in February 2021.

Have you tried completely removing the RGT App from your iPhone? It shouldn't matter but it could be that iOS has decided that while RGT is installed it is the only app that can communicate with the Tacx NEO 2T.

  • It’s working !

    Here is what I did:

    1. uninstalled RGT, then rebooted. Started Tacx Trainer. The Connect screen would not show/Connect as all the times previous.
    2. Uninstalled Tacx trainer, reboot, re-installed Tacx Trainer.
    3. I was very careful this time, accepting alerts, giving My Garmin login details and maybe there was something else.
    4. I tried the Connect button and it took me to the devices screen AND THERE IS MY TRAINER!!! It is now recognized. The screen informed me I was on firmware 036 and I should go to 038
    5. Firmware updated to 038

I can now connect on/off to the trainer through Tacx :-)

    1. RGT reinstalled on the phone.

I can connect to trainer on/off from both RGT and Tacx !

After all the hours I spent on this and all I had to do is reinstall the bloody app, ha ha ha.

Thanks for the ideas of what kinds of things to try… it helped a lot.

    Bye
