Neo 2T with 30 year old bike - 8 speed duraace - will it be OK ?

Hi All,

So I have reserected by old (yes 30 year old) race bike, fitted with one of the first at the time Shimano Duraace 8-speed groupsets. Well, no real surprise, it still works perfectly (almost) out on the road.

Indoors, things ahve mpoved on somewat, so I am looking for a trainer for winter that I can fit the bike up to. It has 130mm dropout internal distance, but the most it can fit is 8-speed. I've read quite a bit about spacers being added for such bikes, so does anyone have experience with such a setup ? Will it work OK. I'd really like it to as I am loving riding the bike again, and going 3 mph quiicker than on my MTB.

Thanks in advance

PP

  • In theory it should as long as you can use a quick release skewer with the frame. Below are images are of a eight speed cassette on a NEO 2T:

  • The hub that is installed on the NEO 2T is an 11s hub. To get your 8s cassette to fit correctly you will need to use the 1.8mm spacer that was supplied with your NEO 2T (it came in the plastic bag that also contained the quick release axle). The part number is T2805.16.

Put the spacer on, it will slide on easily, before you put the cassette on the hub. Then tighten the lock ring as you normally would; 22 - 36 ft.lbs. or 30 - 50 Nm.

FYI; that 1.8mm spacer will allow 8, 9 and 10s cassettes to work with the 11s hub.
