Neo 2T + old bike (campagnolo 9 speed) compatibility

Hi,

I am looking for some advice on whether the Neo 2T will work with my old bike.  I asked Garmin support but got no response.    It's a road bike with quick release wheels and Campagnolo 9 speed veloce.   pix attached.
I guess that the Campagnolo is likely to be a potential issue as 11 speed is standard these days.    Would it just be a case of buying the right cassette and using an adaptor when installing the cassette to the trainer?
Sorry for the basic questions.. I am new to this.
Thanks and hope you can help!
Rob
  • I'm using an old Trek 2300 8 speed with no problems. I'd guess your Campagnolo 9 speed should be fine too

  • Thanks for your answer.  I have heard back from another source who says that the veloce cassettes dont fit onto the Neo 2T - even with the additional Campagnolo freehub body T2875.51.   He suggested I use a Campagnolo Chorus 9 speed cassette - so I am pursuing that route for now.

  • Hi, I have the same problem. In my neo 2t I use the freewheel for shimano 11t Form my bike. My wife have an old campagnolo Chorus 9 speed. I would buy t2875.51 but it is not available at the moment (because the shortage). I've tryed to install the cassette on shimano freewheel but it was absolutely not possible. How do you fix the problem?

  • Usually the problem with old bikes is the axle widht (the distance of the chainstays), if it is lower than 130mm, You cant put your bike onto the 2T.

  • Hi,   as you said, it is not possible to install campag cassette on shimano freewheel.  Following advice from another forum I have a plan I am working through.

    1) I bought a shimano ultegra 9 speed cassette and installed on the neo 2 t.  This is how it is currently setup, but the 0.2mm difference in each shift from shimano to camapag means that while it does shift through the gears, its all a bit grindy,  thrummy, vibey .. not right at all!   I adjusted the derailleur so I had 1 perfect gear just so I could set up zwift and have a go - but this is not a good solution.

    2) Hack the shimano cassette.  I have some 200 micro plastic sheets coming from ebay that I will use to space out the sprockets.   The goal is to add 0.2mm between each sprocket.   Not all of the sprockets are individual ..  I have 2 groups of 2 sprockets that are permanently joined so I won't be able to space between those, I will just add the extra spacer before the next loose sprocket.  The goal is to add 0.2mm between each sprocket "on average" across the whole cassette.

    3) go with the hacked cassette until more tacx campag freehubs become available.   Then, if I am unhappy with my setup I will buy that and buy and install a campag chorus 9 speed cassette.  9 speed veloce cassettes cant be used with Neo 2T because of the spline mounting pattern of old vs new campag cassettes, not because of any sprocket spacing issues.

There is also an option of installing a JTEK shiftmate which would give the extra 0.2mm distance per shift.  I see this as a last resort as it modifies the bike-side of the equation so it won't run well on the normal campag cassette on my back wheel if I want to go outside.

I have also heard internet rumours of hybrid cassettes with shimano splines and camapag spacing.  That sounds like the perfect solution,  but I couldn't find one of those in a 9 speed config.

    Its a mine field!
