Neo2T Bluetooth

Yesterday I encountered issues with the (Neo2T) trainer connecting via Bluetooth. This is the second time within a one month span. Using a combination of Apple iPad and Windows 10 PC, I was able to deduce that the problem lies within the trainer itself and not the connecting "computers". The trainer itself indicates all systems are nominal and no evidence of overheating (one solid red and blue light each). Both times, the disconnects begin relatively early in a ride (4-5 miles) and progressively get worse. I was able to make it through 15 miles when I switched to the iPad from the PC, but it still ultimately lost the connection (and the warning signs were already there after 7-8 miles - i.e. unusual and substantial cadence/power changes with steady pedaling effort).

While attempting to troubleshoot, I thought I'd disconnect power to the trainer as part of the process. At the time, I was still Bluetooth connected within Zwift and was surprised to find that disconnecting the power (at the trainer) did not break the connection. Furthermore, I could still detect the trainer using the Tacx Utility app. So it seems that there must be residual remaining voltage (within the trainer) after disconnecting that is sufficient to power the Bluetooth emitter.

I mention the above because the last time I had intermittent connection issues, I was able to fix the problem for several weeks by upgrading the firmware. That leads me to wonder if the Bluetooth emitter hardware accumulates errors with time, much like a router/modem will do. If so, then attempting to reset by unplugging the DC charger briefly for 1-2 minutes (at the trainer end) may not be sufficient to "clear" the Bluetooth memory. To test this theory, I unplugged overnight and will try another ride today without changing anything else. I'll report back the outcome.

Just curious if anyone else has encountered similar issues or if Garmin tech - should they actually be monitoring this forum - might care to comment?

UPDATE - after leaving the trainer unplugged overnight, I was able to enjoy a 33 mile ride without interruption. So a new part of my routine will be to unplug the trainer after every session. Rather than disconnect at the trainer itself, I will use the primary AC plug for the DC converter to avoid wear and tear on the trainer connector.

Not sure this will be a panacea for others with similar Bluetooth issues, but maybe worth a try. It is a very affordable fix (I hope) :-)

Yes, not disconnecting the plug from the trainer is a good idea as it is not a great, tight, fit anyway. So I switch the power off from the socket. BUT still my connection to the Windows 10 laptop is not happening. I wonder if the Bluetooth is not up to required spec. If so do I need a Bluetooth usb and driver? however I I can train using my iPhone, but screen is too small. Any advice out there?

Recently bought a Neo 2T and experiencing similar issues. Bluetooth not connecting /disconnecting during ride(s).
Also can't connect anymore to Zwift after i connected to tacx app first time....

Interesting to see what the Garmin/Tacx team has to say about bluetooth connectivity issues?

Yes, I'm interested too. I've had an open case for weeks now but have yet to receive any further update on the issue. Happily though, the above "fix" continues to work.

  • I'm having the same issue with Bikesmart, Apple TV and Zwift.  Random bluetooth dropouts during rides.  Any help on the matter would be appreciated.

  • Hmm. I am also experiencing a weird issue. The other day I ended my ride and noticed that the flywheel just kept on spinning for minutes. I unplugged it to stop it and didn't think anything of it. I went to ride today and it showed as connected to Zwift and it was but it was not holding me at the power set by the workout. I unplugged it and tried again, same thing. I then looked in the utility app and my trainer was not showing up. The Bluetooth light was on and it was connected to my Garmin Edge but still wouldn't hold me at power. I too was wondering if it needed to be left unplugged for longer to clear a memory?
