Tacx Neo 2T ERG Mode

Hello, can anyone help with my TACX Neo 2T Unit - I received it today and updated it to firmware 0.34. Tried my first session on Trainer Road (coming from the KICKR 18), and ERG mode doesn't seem to work with Trainer Road.

Reading through the forums it seems the Neo Bike (on firmware 0.40) seems to have resolved this? Are there any plans (and if so when) of releasing these fixes to the 2T. I am still in my return period so can send this back for a refund.

Alternatively, are there any other suggestions to remedy this?

Thank you.

Edit: Description of my issue: Trainer Road app, gives me target of 200 watts, Trainer reads 220 watts and seems the Neo 2T doesn't adjust resistance to bring down my wattage.

Hi Tofel, thanks for the suggestion. Cadence is average 85 rpm, no other power meter. I think erg mode in absolute terms works. It's just the experience during a workout.

So in my example, target is 200, end up doing 220 watts for about 30sec before it hits 200 just stretches me to push more watts causing fatigue, I feel this takes away from the workout experience.

I am just comparing this to my previous Kickr experience as the power levels are a lot smoother during workouts compared to more spikes during erg workouts.

Yes, Kickrs are known to produce much smoother graphs that the NEOs, but once you use an additional power meter, you'll see that the reality is even more spiky than the graphs of the NEO/Kickr initially suggest.

But still, 30s sounds like an awful long time, do you have tracks where it overshoots for such a long time?

Hi Tofel, I've had a go again last night: https://www.trainerroad.com/app/career/khlau/rides/78347632-antelope-2

(hopefully you can see this). I got fed up so just went out last night instead.

Just makes the workout really uncomfortable as it feels like I'm pushing harder than I should?

This is what a typical TR track looks like using my Neo 2T

that's what I am aiming for, I get that compared to the Kickr it shouldn't be exactly smooth as that was owing to Power smoothing on their digital reporting, but can't seem to replicate this?

It's totally understandable that this feel much more uncomfortable. It looks like you are working on the floor of the trainer. I saw that you synced to Strava. What is the speed (as in velocity) shown there?

Avg 28.6mph (on my biggest gear, big ring, smallest cog). Which is actually quite interesting as on the Kickr this used to be about 30+ mph I think.

I might try dropping down the cassette later and using Ant+ via my laptop to see if this makes any difference. Are you running on 0.34 firmware out of curiosity?

Yeah that is most likely the reason. Ideally, you would run at 12.5mph which is around 20km/h (see https://tacxfaqx.com/knowledge-base/linearity-showdown/). This way you have neither the problem of linearity or running into the floor of the trainer. Speed doesn't matter anyways indoors ;) Post your results! I am on 0.0.34, that is correct.

Thanks for that informative link Tofel really good read, dropped to small Chainring and mid cassette here is the result:

https://www.trainerroad.com/app/career/khlau/rides/78427141-monitor-1 - alot "smoother" and within target watts at a reasonable range so I'm not overcooking myself. Granted I couldn't finish because I'm dead from last night and need to work on smoothing my cadence still, but happy to see that this helps out a lot at least I can use Trainerroad again and ERG mode workouts.

    Much appreciated.

Good for you! It still looks a bit "jumpy" to me. There are power smoothing options in the TR app, I am using 3s.
